it doesnt have to. It does have a small circle wall that sticks out maybe half an inch around the speaker that the protective grill goes on but you can just take the grill off. They sell the carpet that has a hole but you dont have to buy it, you can use your stock carpet. However it may muffle the sound a bit, not sure. I imagine you can cut a thin layer off the bottom of the carpet to let some sound come through. Just dont place anything on top of the carpet in that area
You can probably cut a hole in the plastic piece that comes with your car to make a spacer for the carpet. Ill try to take a pic of mine from the side with the grill off for you
