I'm guessing its not cafe standards as much as it is preparing for double price gas in the near future. $7 a gallon may make people not want to buy a unpractical car. Sports cars just don't produce in high numbers by our asian counterparts. But mustang and camaro, who sell 6 figure level mustang and camaro's annually will probably be taking the high tech approach to saving gas. While asians will be heading that way, just to boast better economy numbers and compete with better gas mileage american and/or german future cars???

I don't think the next Z will do much better than 21/30mpg. Which is not astonishing from where we are now... But I think nissan will have the first affordable ev sports car though which will drastically change the fuel efficiency scope of nissan as an overall average.
