Default timing systems

i'm strongly considering buying a timing system for the track. i figure the system would pay for itself in a little over a year of track events (compared to paying $20 at each event to rent). it's also got the advantage of not having to worry about being without timing when you do an event with an organization that does not provide it.

any recommendations for a reliable, relatively inexpensive system? what things should i look for?
