What about the muscle cars? We can say that Ford’s Advancetrac traction control for the Mustang 5.0 GT is awesome. This system provided the optimum amount of wheelspin for dragstrip launches delivering consistent 13.5-second passes. This is quicker than the 370Z at the strip. Turning off the Advancetrac nearly put our Mustang GT into the wall as the ECU was slow to respond to lifting off the trottle. As for the Camaro SS, our tester was a pig. It took a thorough beating to get a 13.8-second pass and it delivered less horsepower on the dyno than the Mustang 5.0.
Perhaps our tester was a lemon…sad that it came from our tax payer dollars given to “Government Motors”. While the muscle cars could hang on the strip, they definitely had issues on the track. The Camaro SS faired better than the Mustang GT on track delivering a 1:29.623 best lap while the Mustang GT ran a best 1:30.413. This put the Camaro SS a second behind the 370Z and the Mustang GT nearly two seconds behind. However, neither the Camaro SS nor the Mustang GT entered a limp mode.
