Real Custom Wheels! Made from Scratch!
Ok,
Who knows where I can get wheel blanks? I have a local shop that can CNC my wheel faces but I need to find a source for wheel blanks. I cant find them anywhere... I find cast wheels but everyone knows they are weaker than rotary forged aluminum blanks. any help would be much appreciated. If I can get these done then I will be more than happy to design and have wheels built for the community at as low of a price as I can and pass on the savings to my fellow z brothers. I am talking barely over cost so you guys can get real 3 piece wheels without the 3 piece cost!!! I just get a small piece to cover my time and effort its not my living but something I don't mind doing on the side. Mike |
ask some vendors on here if they got any info

I will try that... thnx

You are going to design the wheels?
How much experience do you have with building structurally sound wheels for a car that weighs 3200lbs and can go 170mph? I am honestly asking these questions, not putting you down since I would be interested, but are you sure you want to take on that responsibility? What if they fail? I dont know... sounds like one of those things we aught to leave to the pro's. If you are a pro, then awesome, I mean no disrespect. |
I have several CAD programs and a few structural engineers in my company that I am going to pass the idea through. Right now this is all concept and I am trying to find the right sources to be able to do it. Every design I do will go through one of them before I even think about making it. I take no disrespect to what your asking as they are very valid questions to be asking. I run Avacado Studios and we have a few CAD designers in house so I may have them design some wheel faces and I am going to use 6061T forged blocks so I can have a strong wheel face. Like I am saying if its something that I feel comfortable with offering to the community I will. If not then they will stay as my personal project and products.
RCZ I respect your opinion as I too track my car and there is no way in heck I am going to put something on my car that could possibly fail. Especially at the speeds and lateral G's we are pushing on the track. I personally was going to track test each design before release. We will see ;) |
Lets do this...I have access to a metal fab company who can do the work. Only condition is, you have the engineering portion complete and they make it for a good quantity.
Other than that. Get a 19x10 & 19x12 blank, copy the HRE P90's, flat front/concave rear...BAM we're done! |
exactly!

are your structural engineers capable of doing dynamic motion calcs? only reason i ask is cuz the wheel will always be in dynamic motion unless you're stopped and the structural engineering classes i've seen at school only teaches the very basics of dynamics, not the type that will be applied to the wheels.

Honestly, I'm not sure this sounds like a great idea. There is quite a bit more involved than it sounds. You're basically talking about starting up your own wheel manufacturing company. Keep that in mind as well as potential law suits that may follow if the wheels ever fail. There's a difference in being able to physically make a wheel and realistically manufacturing a quality wheel. I hope your CAD programs and your engineers can calculate the stress under extreme abuse to guarantee they will not ever fail. Also you will need to make sure the weight is at an acceptable range, aesthetically pleasing to the eye, hold up over time in both appearance and strength, and are worth the buy over any other wheel manufacturing company available right now. Good luck.

Every great wheel maker started somewhere.

will be interesting to see

I have many options on the table right now. Which option I choose to take IDK... Ryan you point out some great observations that are 100% true and valid. I am working with a few partners to see if this is an endevour we wish to embark on. Only time will tell...
