Steering wheel Vibration with aftermarket wheels

Hey guys, I recently upgraded to 20s from stock 18s and noticed my steering wheel vibrates while driving, especially when the car is cold.

-Ordered the wheels and tires from Discount Tire Co. With factory specs
-There are no signs of misalignment (tires are wearing evenly)
-Took it back to the tire shop and they rebalanced the tires and said they were fine to begin with

I am overly confused what could be the issue.

I am running Hankook Evo v12. Could it be the tires?

Any inputs?

did you install hub centric ring?

ssmoked 06-27-2013 02:06 AM

At first they didn't, they installed it when I took it back. It made no difference at all

+2 rim with tire swap is my guess.

Either one or both front tires is out of balance, or the discount people sold you a rim that is not round.

This could be the root of your problem. I know these reviews are biased but.......... ttp://www.pissedconsumer.com/reviews-by-company/discount-tire.html

I like the one titled 4th Visit Same Problem, where at the end the guy complains he lost 7 days and $160. According to the math he makes $3-4/hr :icon17:

tires are balanced in Grams or Ounces. When I worked at Discount tire, their form of "balanced" was as long as it was .75 ounces/20grams or below on each side it was good. Plus they did not care of static balance. I don't know if they still go by those rules but even with my 18's, I can tell when my tires go unbalanced when its more then .5ounces. Though I am running 255/45 and 275/40's.

ive had my nismos and WEDS tires mounted and balanced there. no issue on mine.

heck, they were friendly and really cared about not marking up my wheels so i give discount tires a

i meant factory offsets.

Im running 255 front (coming from 225 stock) and 285 rear right now.

The weird thing is the vibration goes away after the tires are warmed up. thats why im suspecting the tires are the issue.

Btw, Discount tire is very professional and has hundreds stores across the states and I never had an issues with them before.

try pressuring up the tires to 37 cold and see if that helps.

sounds like the compound is soft and flat spotting.

Good suggestion, going to try it tonight...
Im only running Evo V12 though, not soft compounds like PSS

Discount and some employees CAN do a good job. Hell, I try my best to make best balance possible depending on the vehicle. On F-150's and larger trucks under .25 is good for me. Had a Porsche Cayenne S come into today, balanced those under .10 on both sides. Some vehicles don't require as much as they will never notice. When I was at Discount, didn't matter what vehicle as long as it was under .75. I was young and dumb at the time lol.

Back to topic though, If they are fine after warm up, then yeah its the tires. Does it shake at speed or just turning like early in the morning?
