Carbon Fiber wrap wheels

Anyone on the forum ever wrap their stock rims in the CF wrap? Just curious.

Waiz 03-13-2013 02:12 PM

Never seen it myself

Probably not the beat idea since it will peel off in the elements

aaaahhh. I had not thought about that...good point

Why would it peel off from the elements? The stuff is meant for exterior use. Hell I have has my front fangs, side mirrors, hood, roof, and a partial rear spoil for over a year. No peel and looks just as it was when it when on.

The only concern would be conforming it to the concaves and convexs of the wheels. It will flex pretty far with some heat applied, but sticking at severe curves and/or not creasing would be what I would think would be its draw back....

Wheels are much different and will be subject to brake dust and dirt more than any other part

It would be a PITA to keep clean

You can hydro dip them

dmhenderson 03-17-2013 11:04 AM

Betting this will not end up looking good in 6 months if you do it. Seems like too much effort for too little return.

SgtGoldy 03-17-2013 12:18 PM

I still say drop the money for the real CF Wheels if your into em. Me personally, I think it has to be on the right car, with all the right mods to look correct.

CF wheels? I didn't know there was such a thing. Talk about a super expensive disaster waiting to happen.

CF barreled wheels are stupidly expensive, CF spoked wheels, about as much as Rays

Now if you ball so hard and you've got a spare... 2-3 Million you can have a Koeniggsegg that has hollow CF spoked wheels and CF barrels

dmhenderson 03-17-2013 01:10 PM

I actually saw one of those things in Fairfax not too long ago and did a double take

A Koeniggsegg?
And Fairfax......... In Los Angeles?

And it's the Agera that has the CF wheels, and I HIGHLY doubt the US has any of them yet

dmhenderson 03-17-2013 01:21 PM

Fairfax VA on the main drag into Tyson's (whatever that road is)

dmhenderson 03-17-2013 11:16 PM

Chain Bridge / 123 is where I saw it woot I remembered the road.

Tribalpinoy91 03-18-2013 03:18 PM

I've actually never seen CF wheels before, man they are nice.

dmhenderson 03-18-2013 03:28 PM

"I'm sorry sir, you curbed your carbon fiber rim and cracked it. That will be $2000 for a replacement"

Waiz 03-20-2013 12:43 AM

Don't be a poser, get the real deal if you want to rock CF

This was something I spotted a few months ago

I've seen that car in the parking lot of Boeing a few times. And I 100% agree, you can't wrap in CF cause Ill make fun of you. And no one wants that.

Hey check out what just popped up on /r/autos:

Matt Farah compares carbon fiber vs aluminum wheels on a Porsche GT3. : Autos

TST_CarbonRevolutionWheels_HD - YouTube

dvo 03-20-2013 06:28 PM

you can get monoblock or multi-piece wheels laid with carbon through Auto Explosion

Here's from from a G35 on a set of HREs

dmhenderson 03-20-2013 06:40 PM

According to the reddit thread, a set of carbon fiber wheels will run you $15k (lmao)

oro 03-20-2013 10:22 PM

If you just want the look you can also just get them hydro dipped in carbon fiber film then clearcoat it and it will be as solid as your paint.

:iagree: that's what I suggested

bldg636 03-21-2013 03:56 AM

Who does this hydro dipping? How does the price compare to powder coating?

Maybe cheaper, but once you clear coat, probably the same.
You'll have to google places local to you

But they really aren't comparable... You can get a lot of weird/random patterns and such with hydro dipping while PC will just give you more of a "paint" finish

Wow. Thanks for all the input/feedback. If I had the $ to just dump on CF rims alone, I wouldn't be driving a Z. I'd be in something more exotic. However, I'm a working man and love my Z; earned and paid for. Was just curious if wrapping was an option.. The feedback has made me rethink this concept; but thanks all the same. Nice Porsche pictures as well.
