Tire replacement & TPMS

So I stopped by Discount Tire for a tire quote and was quoted and additional $30 for two TMPS kits. The guy said that when they take the tpms out of the old tires they have to rebuild the kit which sometimes leaks so they strongly recommend replacing them for $15 a piece. Is this necessary? Does that sound right? Thanks!

Why are they touching them if all you're doing is replacing the tires?

Sounds like they're just trying to squeeze extra $$ out of you

The best way to keep from damaging the TPMS is to drop them into the wheels before tire removal.
I think I paid about $5 per wheel on my 350.

So TreeSemdyZee do u think they r commending them be changed because chances r they screw it up when replacing the tires?

Not really. It's kind of like when you do anything that involves a gasket. That's pretty much all the rebuild kits are. Gaskets and maybe some other minor pieces. They aren't really "rebuilding" the TPMS. Just replacing all of the seals so there's no leakage.

edit: Scratch what I just said. It looks like there's more to the rebuild that just seals. Looks like the stem, cap, seal and nut.

Thanks for explanation.

It's a rip off. You're gonna pay at least $1000 for a complete set of new tires, so replacing a valve core and a seal should be included with the new tire(s). Just like new valve stems come free when you by new tires for a car without TPMS.

Discount tire will negotiate, so offer them $4/wheel for the rebuild kit. I doubt they'd argue over it and lose a tire sale.

Thanks everyone i dont mind paying the money if its necessary. Jus dont wanna b ripped off...i think im gettin my stock replacement Potenzas from Tire Rack but Discount will do the mounting. Thanks!

Jsolo 10-16-2012 06:12 PM

^^I recommend getting your tires from the same place that will mount/balance. If there's a problem, there won't be any finger pointing.

Also, discount tire WILL match tirerack's prices. If the associate says no, ask to speak to mgr. If you get a bunch of static, go to another discount tire.

Thanks JSolo...very good point. Lugging them from home to the shop would b a headache anyway.

Do you really like the Bridgestones? IMO there are a lot of better choices for a lot less money. Just a thought.

Z-Girl 12 10-17-2012 06:27 AM

I am a sucka for NOT trying new things. Once u purchase ur stuck with what u hav when it comes to tired. I hav no complaints about the Potenzas. I had them on my G35 and never changed and so far they hav been pretty good for me on the Z. I dont track him or anything. But I guess at $308 a piece I should check some old threads on here and see what others are using. Thanks treezemdyzee! What are you running on?

TreeSemdyZee 10-17-2012 12:03 PM

I've got Continental DW. I had planned on DWS (due to the occasional snow here) at the time, but none were available when I bought..
