whats the deal with open ended lugnuts?

im not hating, nor do i dislike it when people get them (actually think they look good), im just wondering where this open lug nut trend started/what functional reason it has? seems to me that its just an easy way to collect water on the studs and rust them out. someone educate a brother!

So if you want to run some big spacers to accomodate a drag racing rim when you go to the strip over the weekend, then during the week switch back to your daily driver wheels. When you go back to the daily driver wheels to stud is exponetially longer now due to the lack of spacer and super low offset so you need a open ended lug nut for the stud to stick through. Also applies for the RR guy that run a super low offset and spacers to widen out their stance for better lateral grip.

I had a set but just did it for looks (like most people)

My studs didn't rust though and it made it easier to remove the lugs since they were extended

yah, it's so that you can use longer studs and different spacer widths without bottoming out the lugs.

It probably got started in the same places where spoilers, lowering kits, aerodynamic auto body parts, racing wheels & many other auto parts come from, "THE RACING WORLD". Car enthusiast use these products for aesthetics reason. After all, what purpose would a spoiler that helps keep a car pressed to the road at 140+ mph do for a person that never drives above the speed limit. I know that NHRA drag rules require at least 1/2" longer lug nuts beyond the front face of racing wheels. I'm sure all the other type of racing have similiar rules. FUNCTION is safety (more thread to hold wheel).

Using spacers is dangerous!!!!

I replaced the long studs when I used spacer for my stock rims. Now the spacer has to go and don't wanna replace OEM studs back. So I use long open lug nuts.
