costco fail

Ordered replacement tires from Costco. Michelin Pilot Super Sport all four corners. Went to get them installed today and they ordered the wrong size tire for the front. After getting the rears installed the tread appeared different than what the pictures indicated on tirerack.com. Reading the name off of the sidewall indicated they were Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus. Now I have to go back tomorrow morning and have my factory tires reinstalled and have them reorder all new ones. Triple checking the purchase order this time! /sigh what a pain in the ***!

I have seen Costco fail in the tire department many times before.

iron1mike 04-06-2012 06:27 PM

Well the price is still good and they didn't damage my rims so I'm going to get my old ones put back on and have the new "correct" ones ordered to a store in maine where i'm headed. Inconvenience but w/e lesson learned, don't trust anyone but yourself.

cossie1600 04-06-2012 08:52 PM

I am surprise they didn't tell you to just keep driving on the new tires until the other ones come in

roplusbee 04-06-2012 09:56 PM

Not really surprising. I usually go to the dealer if I am not feeling like doing maintenance stuff myself. The exception is my TT install, which was done by Zerolift while I was/am out of the country. Just hard to trust shops/people nowadays!

Now they say they cant order for another store, fine, w/e, returned. Tirerack.com it is. Going this route from now on.

Just for what it's worth, the guys at my local Costco did a phenomenal job, and went outside their way for trying and help me, from installing tires out of factory specs and removing retaining bolts off the front tires (both against policy) to hold my stockers for more than a week before I picked them up.

Over all a great experience, friendly staff, very knowledgeable ( refused to switch the tpms without installing a new service pack; ruber washer, shaft and stem and didn't charge me for it) called Nissan to make sure about nuts torque specs, etc. over all very diligent staff, not to mention they're true enthusiasts, and all certified tire installers from Michelin training program.
I ordered my tires and they arrived in less than 3 business days.

Just like every other business, each store varies on skill, knowledge, and service. Unfortunately it sounds like you got a tire crappy tire shop guy who just didn't care or didn't know. If he didn't call a CSR agent at Michelin to to try to get them to hunt down tires for you then he didn't do all he could. I'm a supervisor in a Costco tire shop in TX. When doin special orders, 90% of the time the automated message only checks in your region. Not all over the U.S. If, he called and talked to an agent, 80% of the time, they can source the tires for you from another region.

On a side note, why didn't you call the store in Maine and have them order it? Or even do it online and have it shipped to the store in Maine you would be by?

iron1mike 04-08-2012 01:10 PM

To be fair, all the blame I would put on the one lackluster employee that I was unfortunate enough to have help me. The rest of the staff there seemed to be good. If anyone goes to the White Marsh, MD location, avoid Denard.

As for ordering in Maine, the tires did not show up by vehicle or size on their web site and there are no stores in Maine. The closest store is near Boston.

Holy sheep dooo do ,I would never let costco do any changeovers. We bought a set of blizzacks and heard horror stories of them from our car club, so i put gorilla tape all around the rim and hub centre so they wouldnt get scratched. Thank god we brought the wheels in loose otherwise they would have screwed up that too. Stupid woman changing the tires took off all the tape prior to changing them and gouged the crap out of all 4. We had to fight for a month with the manager before they agreed to pay the $500 repair bill. They tried saying they were there before and thank god im a fanatic and took pics just before. When we confronted the crazy lady on how she changed the tires she just said the scratches were there before, ya really on a brand new oem tire car. She took no responsibility for it and said this is a bunch of ******** and walked away. NEVER EVER AGAIN .

Just had VIP up here in maine install my tires. They ended up scratching one of my rims, had to argue with the manager for 20 minutes to get them to agree to fix it...currently a work in progress.

This is exactly why I go to the wheel shop in my area to do anything where my wheels have to be touched. It's expensive but the job is done correctly as they are used to dealing with high price wheels. These local retailer shops just do not take their time and couldn't care less about your wheels. If you feel like you have to take pics of your wheels prior to work being done you are in the wrong spot!!
