TPMS old wheels to new?
 

Hey guys,

hopefully got my new wheels turning up tomorrow, will be getting my tyres fitted to the wheels and wanted to put the wheels on the car myself as don't really trust anyone around here to install them onto the car.. (people just don't take care).

What's generally involved with the TPMS side of things, how is it moved from wheel to wheel etc.. anyone had to do this?

If it's to much screwing around to do before the weekend (hopefully getting wheels tomorrow sometime, getting tyres fitted on Thursday but heading off on a holiday on Friday but driving the car.. was hoping to have new wheels on), will a light or anything constantly be on the dash etc.? will it stop anything from working in the car as normal?

tried a search but couldn't find anything relevant to all the above.

The sensors are part of the valve stems. They will swap them when they swap your tires from one rim to the other. On some cars, they need to go on the same location they came from, but since we don't have an individual readout as to which is low, it really doesn't matter if they get moved around in location.

So I'll need to take my old wheels (currently on the car) with me when I take my new wheels/tyres for the tyres to be fitted to the wheels? I've got 20's coming and going to be selling the stock sport wheels + tyres.

so to sum up, I have existing 19" wheels/tyres and new 20" wheels/tyres arriving.

will anything not work if I just put the new wheels/tyres on without swapping the TPMS over, other then the TPMS sensor itself obviously in the vehicle?

yes, you have to take both sets, or buy a second set of TPMS sensors and have them installed in the new tires then reprogrammed, which the tire store should be able to do.

I'm checking with my dealer how much a set of sensors will cost, then can just sell the old wheels with the sensors as well I guess.

what's involved with reprogramming? have you ever had to do it, is it just a case of disconnecting battery etc.?

OR If I don't get the TPMS sensors installed to new wheels, is there an easy way to get rid of any fault codes? the car doesn't ping at you does it? haha.

If you don't have the sensors in or have them reprogramed you will get a light on all the time but no sound from it.

its really easy for them to take the sensors out and replace them with normal stems from you sport wheels. Break em down like normal and just push down on the tire where the sensor is. Unscrew it and pop a rubber stem in. They dont even have to dismount the tire. Just break it from the wheel and push it down to remove it. I work in a tire shop and do it all the time. Now they may require you to purchase the tpms rebuild kits like we do.

Think i've organised something! getting some springs installed tomorrow morning and there is a tyre place 2 doors down, gunna roll the stockers down to them while the suspension place takes my wheels off so I can get the valves swapped to normal units until tomorrow afternoon/thursday, take the new wheels to them to have installed with the tyres fitted to my new wheels, so I don't have to keep worrying about them using a gun on my lug nuts :)

Chrischhorn - you did say unscrew.. the guy at the wheel shop said as long as they unscrew they can definitely do it no probs. anything special I should tell them if they don't do them very often? (this is what i'm worried about).

all good, my existing wheels didn't even have TPMS sensors on the wheels? Either we don't have TPMS in Aus or the sensors are in the ABS unit already instead of having a sensor on each wheel...

Wheels were mounted last night ;) couldn't be happier!
