These wheels shouldn't break at all from normal driving or cornering, if they break under normal driving conditions, then their is a design defect. Nissan should do a recall on them.

I can understand a wheel breaking due to a pot hole, hitting a curb, or after an accident, but not from normal day to day driving conditions.

While these new lite weight design mags look great, you can really see how flimsy they are, compared to a solid slotted mag as used in the past.

Another area that probably causes a lot of stress on the wheel is the tiny side wall, of todays wheel designs. When you had higher side walls the tires probably obsorbed a lot of the stress.

Wow

Shyt sorry to see this.

I don't buy the whole wheel failure theory. If it fails and shears off like that, its going to break off instantly, no shaking as if its about to fail. My guess is we're missing a huge chunk of the story here. It looks like this:

Soo the process is moving along should have it back in 3 days or so. And for everyone who wants to know more info, here it is. I was at a 4 way light at night, no one around. So I took the corner and whipped out the back of the car, then throw it in second, car straightened out now im going about 30mph and then car started to shake lose control did a 180 and hit the curb exactly like that corvette in the video up above. And yes my VDC was off.

The OEM chrome wheels from the 350z were known to crack to the point where there was a NTSB inquiry into it. This would be the first I've heard from the cast 18s on the 370, though.

Wasnt there an issue with the stock lug nuts or something on the 09-10 models? Sounds to me like the lugs were failing and when you whipped the car you loosened the lugs enough where the shaking began and then the wheel basically was hanging by a couple threads....

VERY glad you are all good man!

That was an issue with the locking lugs. Some dealers put the 350z locking lugs on the 370z. I doubt this would have been the cause since it looks like the part where lugs wheel are located remained intact.

Good call... Maybe a broken axle? Its good to see the OP walked away from this!

corbin09 03-01-2012 02:23 PM

These cars become pretty awkward when you are out of control.. it was probably just an "in over my head" situation. I know at the track I have had 1 of those.. When youre in the moment, it even feels like you broke something.

NYBladeZ 03-01-2012 04:03 PM

I'm going to have to chalk this one up to hooneries + no VDC, but hey at least OP is able to walk around and tell the story. It should go something like this:

"Yo so it was a clear dry night, no one in sight. I wanted to feel the power and shift like Vin Diesel while sliding through a twisty turn. So I turned off my VDC, getting more poooower and decided to throw this biotch hard through the turn. As I'm sliding and smiling I slam her into 2nd. Next thing I know, omg, the car is shaking and all by itself turns around, out of control and slams into the curb. I'm telling you man something was wrong with her, something broke and caused me to wipe out. Definitely wasn't me!"

silviakid02 03-12-2012 10:36 PM

I know this is a little off the OP's topic but I had a set of 18x8 Rota Tarmac 2s on my WRX for about two years and I can say that I have SLAMMED a few pot holes at speed that I didn't see coming and I never had any problems with them. I also had and still have many friends running Rotas on various makes of cars with no complaints.

I'm planning to purchase another set of Rotas in 19/9.5-10.5 +20 for my Z. Hardest problem now is deciding between the Grid (Work Te37) or P45 (Nismo LMGT4).
