Fronts too narrow??

So at the suggestion of some of the board members I wanted to run 265/35/19 and 285/35/19 on my RE-11s that I plan on buying.

Costco has a really good price $1200 after install and tax for RE-11s but only has 245/40/19 for the front (has the rears). Will the wider rear and thinner front be too mismatched and cause steering issues or should it be ok? I always have the option of splitting the order, half from tire rack and half from Costco.

Thanks guys..

245/40 and 285/35 are the factory nismo sizes and look and feel great.

cossie1600 02-16-2012 06:27 PM

Don't listen to them. Just throw 4 285 35 19 and call it a day. I had 265 last year and my fronts wore 20% quicker than the 285 because it was working so much harder. If you want to try, I will give you a pair of my 265/35/19 for free to try.

Btw $1200 for a set of 285 35 19 installed? If so, I am in!!!! I just bought some new wheels, they could use tires. Discount has it for $333 a piece!

MattP725 02-16-2012 09:32 PM

You can't run 285s up front without rubbing, that much I am sure of. And the 1200 was for 245s and 285s (staggered).

cossie1600 02-16-2012 09:54 PM

Really? I must have missed the memo given it's been on the car for 7000 miles....

Talk them into $1200 for 4 285 35 19, then jump on it as fast as you can. Discount tire has each tire for $333 before anything. I am going to check Costco out myself.

That's a 285/35/19 on the stock 9x19 wheel?! Impressive.

cossie1600 02-18-2012 12:00 PM

Many mount 295 A6s. Is it ideal for safety? Maybe not, but the car drives 10x better. Car drives more neutral, better tire wear (20-30% better).

wdkwang 02-18-2012 12:14 PM

the bigger the gap in tire size, the more understeer prone you will be. ferrari runs setups like 235mm front and 335mm rear to offset their oversteer prone, rear engine mounted cars.

cossie1600 02-18-2012 08:48 PM

Yes, but you also need the grip to turn the front end on a front heavy car like the Z

wdkwang 02-18-2012 10:00 PM

That's true but I've compared our tire widths to my friends' beemers, supras, and such. The 135i is a inline 6 with tt's and weighs the same as our cars. It comes with 215/245mm tires. Our car actually comes with very thick tires for the power it comes with. To the guys that run a 275/315mm N/A setup on our cars, I think it's too much and unbeneficial cause it's just too much tire and extra unsprung weight for 332bhp = slower car

wdkwang 02-18-2012 10:04 PM

I firmly believe unless you're boosted and running at least 500whp, you have no business running 315mm+ tires unless you just like the fat tire look or having more grip then you'll ever use

wdkwang 02-18-2012 10:07 PM

But back to OP's point, Amuse, as well as a seasoned tracker at a reputable shop called Performance Motorsports here runs his completely gutted nismo on a square 275mm setup on slicks

martin82 02-18-2012 10:56 PM

I was recommended to run a square setup, same rear size into the front tires.
Then I can rotate tires by dismounting them etc.

cossie1600 02-19-2012 12:39 AM

They pretty much wear at the same rate, I am not sure how much you will be able to rotate them. If you drive/track enough, you will be going through a set every year. Just save whatever that is left and form a set out of it. I have my rear tires from 2 years ago that I will probably have to use this year in the front. I have said this before. My first set was $1240 installed, second set was $1350, now they are going to be over $1400!

what about rear rims installed in the front?

Tubro 02-19-2012 03:25 PM

Cossie1600 that pic you posted before--is that a pic of your 285's on your front 9x19? Because they seem to fit fairly flush with the 9 inch wheel. I assumed there would be much more tire bulging beyond the side of the wheel (I'm sure there is a techinical term for what I'm trying to describe...if you know it please educate me).

cossie1600 02-19-2012 09:50 PM

It's not flush, but it's not pathetic looking by any means. I don't have any recent pictures, but you can see the car from far in this picture

Tubro 02-20-2012 08:26 AM

Thanks for posting the pic--I'm not worried about how the wheel/tire looks, I'm just am trying to access how feasible/durable the setup is. I know you autocross your Z and I'm trying to figure out the best tire combo to do the same. I know you've said no rubbing, but are your front fenders rolled?

cossie1600 02-20-2012 09:59 AM

nope, all stock. two years ago fronts were destoryed (265) at about 7000-8000 miles. I have 6000 on mine so far, still got about 3/32nd on them in the front
