Its an aluminum wheel with carbon "overlays"

To each his own though.

Check these wheels out. Half Carbon/Kevlar half Magnesium.

Well they go for a bit less now. They go for around $2000 a wheel....

Entirely not worth it hahaha :tiphat:

Dymag tests show that the wheels have better damping properties than aluminum and magnesium competitors, with three times the impact resistance. While a standard steel Porsche GT3 RS 18-inch wheel weighs about 14 kg/30.8 lb, a Dymag carbon/magnesium equivalent weighs around 6.5 kg/14.3 lb, saving about 30 kg/66 lb per car and reducing the moment of inertia – the energy required to turn and stop the wheels. The result is either a reduction in emissions, an increase in power, or both. One automaker, says Musk, reports that a weight savings of 30 kg translates to an engine power increase of 40 hp.
I've seen people pay quite a bit more for a lot less HP hehehe. $2000 exhausts come to mind ;)

(yes I know you need 4...thats a minor detail)

^^^^ those wheels are not lighter then some others so how are you gaining power with wheels?

xDIEGOx 12-19-2008 02:21 AM

I think these 100% carbon fiber wheels look much better than the above wheels. They only weigh 6lbs each. But they cost between $10k to $12k for the set, or $2.5k to $3k per wheel. :eekdance:

Out of all the wheels listed, I think the dymag wheels top the list.

Not a fan of the CF 360forged wheels. The 360forged wheels are very light as is, but not a fan of CF overlay.

Many of these wheels are incredible, but spending $5-6K+ on a set of wheels just does not make sense for a $30K car.

With that said, I do wish HRE was a more common wheel for the Z. Brand new, they are quite expensive, but on the used market, they really don't cost much more than used Volks. However, not many Z owners have HRE wheels to begin with, so alas, there is little to choose from in the classifieds.

The idea is that you spend less of the engine's energy to overcome the inertia of heavy wheels. Think about it, it takes a lot less force to spin a wheel made of paper than it does to spin one made of lead.

So by reducing the weight of the wheels, you are able to use more of the engine's power for what its meant to be...to make the car move. This is specially important and makes the biggest difference in this so called "unsprung" weight. That is weight that isnt supported by the car's suspension system. (Brakes, axles, wheels, tires, etc)

This wont only make the car feel faster and more lively, but it will also make it feel more agile and free.

They may not be as light, but you have to remember the other face of the coin...Strength. You could have a super light wheel, yes, but whats the point if it is going to explode or bend on the first lap. The dymags are super light when you consider how strong they are...

Yup, but those explode if you hit something on the street. A pothole and youre dead...those are really like smooth track racing only wheels....:icon17:

I like this guy.

^^^ i understood the weight reduction but my point was there were wheels that weight less and cost less that are still strong. However I too cannot ustify 6K on wheels it is too much I'll go with a TT tune and susbention upgrades before my wheels.

RCZ 12-19-2008 06:40 PM

There are very few wheels with the exception of magnesium wheels that are as strong and light as those. Key word strong.

shumby 12-19-2008 06:42 PM

^^^ you going off roading with them?
