Curbed wheel/tire ... Need replacement?
 

I took a special stroll thru the walmart parking lot to take a crappy parkers picture. On my way out, I took a turn too sharply to avoid hitting oncoming cars and my right rear wheel hopped a curb. It want particularly high, but it gouged my wheel and tore my tire's "lip".

Bridgestone Potenza sport wheels and tires.

In the pics you can see it is routed above and below the lip so you could essentially put a thin pencil through the tear on both sides of the lip. No air is leaking (as far as I know.. This happened yesterday and it still looks okay. I even drove on it last night and this morning.)

What do you think? Should I stop worrying about this? Why or why not?

sorry to see this easyD-. unless there's wires showing through you only cut through the lip protector layer, i think. i had the same thing happen to me on my conti DW's on weds. i could put a swab trough the tear, no wire showing. i cleaned it with alcohol and glued it up using rubber cement. it held air fine and drove fine until i got my replacement wheel and tire mounted. since it was on my new set of weds i just decided to use the lightly scuffed one as my rear spare. :)

i think you're fine with just glueing the tear but if you dont feel comfortable or start seeing a bubble on the sidewall replace it. you can't tell the damage on the tire from the outside, so...

Yikes....sorry to hear and see that man. Part of the reason my z never ever gets close to a Walmart type place. The idiots around that place is a multitude.

As for the damage to your rim/tire, if it were me, I would be replacing the tire and either repairing the rim or buying a new one. It's not worth the safety risk of blowing a tire at highway speeds. And I know there's some good places that can repair rims well, but.....eh that's just what i would do if it were me. That would bother me too much.

I think the wheel has a clear coat so perhaps that would start to peel. Might want to get the balance checked and have the tire inspected at a minimum.

I would like to say that i would replace the tire and repair the rim immediately... but the reality of it is that I am a procrastinator and a tight ***. I would probaly hand work and touch up paint the wheel un til I was ready to change the tires and then have it repaired correctly. That is provided tire didn't show any additional signs of carcas or sidewall damage.

Disclaimer- The safest thing to do is have the wheel repaired and replace the tire. :tiphat:

The tire and wheel are both completely safe to run, the part of the tire that got gouged is thicker and designed to provide some protection to the rim which it did. As for the wheel, that will not affect its performance or longevity. You would have to have had a much more severe impact before you should start thinking about replacing it, if you can live with a small blemish.

Thanks for your responses before this got buried, all. Ken, I'm surprised you glued yours. Don't you replace after every rock stuck between the treads? :D

lol, i did replace mine. new wheel and tire and kept the knicked one as a spare (per my post). :tup: when i have a rock stuck, i rev to 4k and drop the clutch. it cleans tires effectively. :icon17: jk, i dont do that.

but the rubber cement held fine and i didnt feel unsafe at all. i just couldn't stand the eye sore. (wife even made fun of me for just being a kenchan... where? huh? oh that? oh... and you bought a new wheel and tire? lol :bowrofl: ) :rolleyes:

man you can fix that rim easy yourself, its at the top part so you can sand it down with a file then with sand paper, and you will hardly notice it... Tire should be fine.
