Advice needed? Got new rear tires but they scraped my rim!

Not sure what to do now so I figure I'll get everyones opinion before I go back to this place after the holiday weekend.

So Saturday I went to a very reputable place that a couple other Z'ers and a friend of mine had recommended for rear tires. Everything went well until I went to wash my car later that evening and noticed that they gouged the powerdercoat in 2 places on one of my black wheels. It's not awful, but of course I not happy about it. As you can see from the pics (please excuse the dirty tires lol), the gouges are about 4-5 inches long and about 1/8 wide on the lip of the wheel...My fault I guess for not inspecting the wheel closer before I drove off their lot.

So the question I pose is what do I do now? Obviously I'm going to say something, but do I demand some sort of refund? I need front tires soon so perhaps I ask for a discount on the fronts. Can the damaged spots be touched up? I'm not sure where they were originally powerdercoated so I'd almost be afraid of the color not matching if I had the entire wheel redone.

Any input is appreciated. I just don't want to go back and have them say "these types of things always can happen blah blah blah...live with it."

Did you show them the scratches before you left?

If so

I would ask for the cost of re-powder coating the damaged wheels.

No unfortunately I didn't notice until later that evening...and they were closed when I called them

I would definitely go back to them to show them. Be nice at first, but raise hell when you meet with their push back.

Yeah that's kind of what I was thinking. You can tell its fresh and that its not curb rash because its real smooth.

Good luck and let us know how it works out. Happy Fourth also.

They don't come stock in black Soo, what I would do,, being a painter is fool the eye,, get some satin black spray paint tape off the areas not to be painted and put on a couple,3, light coats. Don't try to cover in 1 coat.... Work a deal on the fronts. I had to replace a front tire in Phoenix at Discount Tire when they removed my spare they scatched the car's paint at the trunk,, I got the tire for free.. You should be able to squeeze them for something... Good luck

Since the gouge is smooth I was thinking about paiting it too. I think its more of a matte black. Is that the same as satin?

Its funny you mention a sharpie because thats the first thing that popped in my head. I think paint might hold up a bit better though lol

Luckily the damage wasn't worse. I would consider it a lesson to check peoples work before leaving a Car Wash, Tire Shop, Window Tinting shop, Audio Shop, and the Dealer. Touch it up and move on, most people looking at the car aren't going to be perfectionist and won't notice it the first time around. Good Luck

You're in Ohio, should've drove to tirerack in southbend like I did. :D wasnt about to get my expensive wheels scratched up at a local wheel shop. TR has the best staff and equipment and plenty tire selection. :p

Satin should be a "matte" that matches but would hurt to check the gloss on a piece of Plastic. if you just paint the injury noone will know but You.. The tire company might refuse to work with your rims again but you should be able to get something for the inconvienence.

Good luck

They should fix this, no questions asked.

cjeezy 07-05-2011 12:46 PM

So I spoke with the manager this afternoon. He of course seemed very surprised by the scratches and said that only plastic typically touches that area of the wheel. He typed my concern into my record on his computer (he showed me his comments) and noted that they need to discount a portion of the labor and parts for either a CAI I wanted or front tires. He said just to come talk with him next time I'm ready to purchase and he'll work something out with me. He seemed pretty genuine and was going to talk with his crew...but at this point he said in all honesty they would probably deny it. I didn't ask what the discount would be since I was already 30 minutes late on my lunch break and he had other customers. Plus it sounded like it depended on what I bought, however whatever it is will be better than nothing I guess..and I really don't have any proof at this point that they indeed did the damage.

He also said to use a semi-gloss paint on the scuff. Do I need to prime or sand it first?

NOT SEMI GLOSS BUT SATIN PAINT but like I said try it on a piece of plastic and let it dry for at least a day because the sheen mellows with time ,, FYI, I paint for a living and I paint my own cars that have won at the Z CAR NATIONALS

LennyZCSD 07-06-2011 05:59 PM

Now the wheels didn't come stock that color and they were probably not powder coated because part of the PC proocess is a sand blasting, had that been done the paint should not have scraped off which leads me to believe it's just paint so don't sand or prime because it will change the build thickness...

Thanks for the responses guys! I'll try the satin then. I don't think its just paint on the wheels though as it didnt really chip off. It looks like they actually sliced a thin layer of the metal off of the wheel. Kind of like when you peel a potato. Also, when I purchased the car from the Nisssan dealership they told me that the wheels were professionally powdercoated because if they were just painted, they could not have certified the car without changing the wheels...at least that's what I was told
