wheel balancing issues
 

i have the five-ad-s5 installed w/ hub centric rings.

I have had tire discount balance the fronts twice on the same hunter 9700, and i still get a vibration in the steering wheel at 60 mph.

opinions?

try a different balancer maybe?

maybe have them check the roundness of the wheels and tires. You could balance an oval if you wanted to. so that might be slightly the case.

maybe alignment.... if you moved up in size that is usually the problem.. Also check the tires to see if defected or bump. I personally recommend somebody better but depending on the area your in, you may not have them. Butler Tire is expensive but they always treated me nicely and do a high-speed balance at 160mph "I BELIEVE".

With the tire and wheel at normal running temperature, jack it up.
Spin the wheel and it should be perfectly round with no tread bulges, usually caused by heavy krb mounting. They disappear when it cools.
The tire should sit in the wheel well equally all round (which you can see when spinning it)

More likely the hub centric ("spigot") rings are sloppy or worse. They should measure 66.1mm ID plus a thou or two. i.e. a sliding but not loose fit on the hub and /or tight on the wheel. ...and wide enough to engage on the hub/wheel past any taper or radius.

Mercedes Benz supplied many a new vehicle with wrongly (loosely) centered wheels to give the same problem, and I understand Volvo have done the same. If those "respected" manufacturers can do it then so can your wheel supplier.

If all that's OK then have them balanced at some other place with some other tech!

If the hub-centric adapters are plastic then throw them away, I haven't had very good luck with those. If the aftermarket wheels are lug-centric then you can get away without them.

Did they detect any road-force measurements on the balancer?

KDO, I have the same rims different color and i also have that vibration... My hub centric rings are on order, so I cant confirm that yet. I recently had my wheels aligned (when i first got the rims) and just yesterday had the balancing checked; they were not off at all.

I am really hoping the hub centric rings will solve it, it is 66.1 --> 73.1 - kind of a decent gap imo.

The worst case in that the holes drilled for the lugs are not perfectly centered. I hope that's not the case.

i put hub centric rings on mine and they still vibrate a bit...any vibration at all is un-acceptable to me

Vibration does wonders to bearings too...

Well KDO, I got my hubcentric rings installed and I still have the shake. The catch... my tires wont stay balanced.

I got them balanced when I put the rings on, everything was fabulous. 30 minutes later, a little shake --> 1 hour later, shake is incredible. Made my way to the closest tire shop (was a discount tire) and BAM! The tires are off again! (only the fronts, rears are fine).

Any ideas?!?!

im back in iraq again, so ill have to wait till i get home and get the swifts installed, then do an alignment and re-balance all four wheels again...then see from there...

I refer to my previous comment...the hotter the tires the more likely the can bulge....and you said they were AOK when cold, but got worse when getting warm.
And the history of those tires is?? New and unused or new and maybe a little used?

Further, what's your spacers and ride height? Was the alignment (toe) re-set
and is the camber to spec or gone a bit wild?---

But what you have said now is air trapped between carcase and tread...

Hub-centric rings need a thorough check...if you can get a 2 thou feeler between the ring and the wheel or the ring and the hub, get proper rings.

If they are made of plastic and the wheel is tightened on the ground, per most manuals, that won't help.

Best in all cases to try to tighten the wheel off the ground .. then finish the job with it on the ground.

Further "bolt centric" or "stud centric" fitments are for trucks, not cars, and never for real cars at real speeds !

They are just useful phrases for sales folk.

I just had the dealer re-balance the tires using (dont know the terminology) but it was a balancer that applies pressure to simulate car weight; then they tightened them up while the car was still off the ground.

I took a drive on several freeways and didnt feel anything! I think that is what it was.

where did you go? i need to do the same!
