Painting Wheels (professionally). Thoughts?

Can anyone shed some light on the effectiveness of having wheels Painted.

The price to paint vs. powder coat is half the cost, and i was wondering how they will last.

I've noticed when people do this themselves (they usually do index card trick) they come out pretty crappy or dont last very long.

I would have these done professionally (at a powdercoat shop), and the wheels would not have tires on them.

Do you guys think this is a bad idea. I really don't want to pay double for powder coat, since the color scheme I'm going for isn't "normal" and I may get sick of it....

Thanks fellas.

I'm in the same boat. I know even pro painting is going to pick up rock chip like crazy

Are you going for black?

yea, i've heard they can add extra layers of clear and add to the durability...

not 100% sure on color, however it wont be black.

Paint isn't a bad route as long as it is done correctly...

Have to take the tire off to get a good finish, and with care will last as long as paint on the car.

labor here in hawaii runs $350-400 for all for not including taking the tires off :(

September 2008 I paid $400 to have mine painted (including the center caps) and to this day they still look mint even after 45K miles

+1 on having a professional do it, you will need to have it done again otherwise.

I'm getting mine done this weekend.. I'll let you know how it turns out..

painting will cost $500? Last I checked powdercoating only costs $100-$120 per wheel if Im not mistaken.

chuckd05 05-20-2011 02:11 AM

it all depends on the shop... are you painting the new wheels you got?

Scott @ RA 05-20-2011 02:47 AM

Wow, we prep, sandblast, and powdercoat wheels all the time, and we never charge that much.... Jeeezz It would be cheaper for you to ship us your wheels all the way over here to me than pay that much for powdercoating.

BUT, powdercoating IS the way to go for wheels no doubt. It is 4 times more durable, last longer, is more brake dust and chemical resistant, etc. Paint on wheels is NO match for powdercoating.

If done the way you guys do it it works awesesome. Buttt someplaces just rough up the surface and just powder coat them. Then it chips of and sh!t. Make sure what ever you do to your wheels make sure that they prep them extremly well.

not a bash to Scott just a helpful reminder to go to a pro. Like Scott

yeah dude Al's Hubcaps charges $500 to powdercoat 4 wheels, with everything included. If you're gonna do it, do it right.

spitfire9200 05-20-2011 08:30 AM

those Nismos cost $500 to get powdercoated, and honestly it's WAY better than painting.

RedBullRR 05-20-2011 08:33 AM

Get them powder coated you can find a shop rite here on LI to do it for around 400.

Econ 05-20-2011 01:06 PM

well its costing me $120 a wheel to get them painted/mounted, and they said they would touch them up or powdercoat them if the paint didn't last.

I went with paint for a couple reasons. The wheels im painting came with painted black faces from the factory, and the shop said the oven could melt the paint of the face (i just want the lips painted).

reason 2 it was cheaper by $120

reason 3, it's easier/cheaper to change if I decide I don't like it.

reason 4, more color selection

overall, i guess i couldve shopped around a little more and gotten a better price, but the shop does awesome work, and they said theyll redu em free of charge if they start chipping.

wheels will be ready tomorrow.....
