Tire issues
I took my car to a Nissan dealer because my rear tire (driver side) was leaking air slow, I wanted them to repair the tire. I was called in after a while to the car bay, I was told that the tire could not be replaced because they had found 3 nails in the tire and it was also pretty worn out instead of buying the stock yokohoma tires 245/45 r18 95w (Which was 660 A piece) I took the opportunity to get two new ones from a different location.
I took it to a tire shop (Martin Tire) and bought two Toyo proxes4 245/45zr18 100W. Cheaper and the guy told me they were a little better than my stock tires. I really do not know if that is true. So I was driving home and there is a long straight way so I decided to punch it (like Usual) but as soon as I got to about 80MPH the car started to swerve. Never felt like that before, I got home and looked at tires made sure they were installed properly right tire on the right left on the left. I noticed that my rear driver side tire was butterflied in. So I took it to Nissan the next day I told them what I was experiencing and they told me it was an Alignment. I paid 90 bucks for one and the issue still there I got it back and did the same thing hit 80MPH and it felt the same way. I was able to hit 100MPH without any issue before it never felt like it was going to swerve. Can anybody tell me if its the tires or something else? I am going to take it back to Nissan to see what else it could be but I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this. |
Sounds like the new tire was damaged during installation. It is tough to do but it does happen.
Got any pics of this "butterflying"? And I would take it up to any speed until you get the issue sorted, could have catastrophic failure and let loose. |
Nissan corrected the butterfly effect with an alignment but the issue still there.
|
It may not of been corrected completely. Please describe the butterfly effect in more detail or post a pic if you have it.
|
In for response. I have the same issue also. I just had 2 new rear Hankook installed and have swerving issues at 80+mph. I just thought it was because the tires needed to be broken in or something.
|
Brand new tires are very slippery for about 200 miles until properly scrubbed in. It could be as simple as having slippery new tires in the rear with grippy tires in the front.
Check pressures, get them scrubbed in by throwing it through a few freeway on ramps and report back. |
I do not know how to add pics to this.
|
I will drive it around and see if it goes away

Let me know if I need to take more

Can't really see anything clearly in those pics. Can you zoom in some more?

Why do we get people complaining about poor handling cars after mismatching tires every two weeks or so?
|
Here you go
I took closer pic of tires but when I try to upload them I get an error I think they are to big.
I am now wondering if its because I have two different set of tires. my front ones are the original stock Yokohomas and my back ones are the Toyo proxes 4. I dont think that would make a difference I have done this in the past with my previous 350z and eclipse. |
If it is the tire that was damaged when installing, You should take it back to Martin tire and get it replaced, as opposed to taking it to nissan.
Maybe you need to break the tires in, looking to get new tires, but I will replace all 4 and decrease the stagger as much as i can so that i dont have any potential problems. let us know how it goes. |
tires, especially rear tires if new, must be broken in first. if you use mis-match tires obviously it will have different bias especially in the wet.
drive around normally for 100miles and report back. also SLOW DOWN! |
Took it back to Martin Tire
I woke up today and instead of taking the car to Nissan I took it back to Martin Tire. They rebalanced tires and I took it for a spin but same issue, The manager at that location sent me to a "state of the art" location that can run the tire and do all types of test.
I got to the other Martin Tire and they did a lot of test to the two rear tires they found one that was out of round. They replaced it no problem I took a test drive after replacing it and it still there. I have never had this problem before I did the same thing to my 350Z had to replace the rear tires because of a blow out. I did not have this swaying from left to right or right to left. I do not understand what is going on. I will drive it for about 100 miles and see if that makes a difference, if not I will go ahead and probably buy the two front ones same brand as the back and see if that helps. I will also slow down to our speed limit of 60MPH for the time being. :shakes head: |

also having two dif brand or model tire front and rear isnt an issue as long as they are both in acceptable conditions. |
Break them in!
|
doesnt matter.

Breaking in
So I guess I will break them in and see how it goes. I will post back later on about a week or two to let you all know whats up.
|
Update
So after 200 miles of breaking in tires I still had the same issue. I went back to the shop and we both agreed that it might be the Car not liking the Tries. We replaced the rear with some Falken 502 same stock size. They rebalanced them and put them right back. I immediately felt a difference I am able to do 80+ with no issues. I will be took car to work today to do further testing since I go up mountain and has nice curves that my car loves. After work going home the turns are tighter I will see if I see any swaying from left to right. I will update this again today and hopefully issue is fully resolved.

i had the same issue. i got a metal size of a quarter in my rear tire. i added air and it is leaking big time so it must be unpatchable. so i went to big o tire. they were right next to my house. and the guy suggest nitto nt850, asymetrical tires. i dunt know about tires so i just get it. its was $205 a piece. expensive, i know. anyways i need tire right away so i just say go ahead install it. still using stock yokohama in fronts.
so i thought im good, and then i drove it on freeway and it swerve going on straight line. i can feel its rear doing it, not the front. ok i thought maybe needed break in. i call and ask if it should be swerving on strait aways on the freeway. its even worse on a not so strait and in the freeway too. it feel like rear tires slide and jumpy. they say let it break in 1st so i said ok. and about 600 miles in it still doin it. so i call and he let me return and get different ones. so they priced the yokohama advan sport at $290 each. i was like ok. ill just do it. add $180 from original price i paid for the nittos. and hope it is worth it to pay to feel safe driving again. then when installed, even brand new, it didnt swerve at all. so i dunt know what was wrong. is it the nitto 850 or is it diff type tires on front and rear to causes the swerves? now even tho i paid so much for stock tires im happy its safe. before i was driving with one hand on the wheel, when it was on those tires i drive 2 hand on wheel to turn wheel back to other way when it swervy. now comfort of driving is back even tho i overpaid. next time i aint goin to big o tires even tho they had let me return the bad tires. good service by them but way too pricey. soon ill need replaced the fronts so now im doing my homework on some tires. |
1. you have mismatched tires...they will always feel off...the faster you go the more swirly they will get, and dangerous!
2. You bought low performance tires that are softer than the stock tires, they are going to feel less planted. 3. Next time do some research on tirerack.com and spend some money on the right tires (all 4 the same brand/model for your sports car. Tire Search Results |
yea thanks. the faster i went the easier it swerves. now i know mismatch is not ok. i have been looking at tirerack.com and other sites
|
It doesn't matter if you break it in or not. Breaking it in will help a bit, but the issue still persists. It doesn't inspire confidence at all. Just get the same tires. I put hankooks in the rear and I have Advan sport in the front (driven for 3,000 miles).

I told ya, see #20...

I had this problem when swapping my stock rears out with some hankooks. Found out that the stock bridgestones are directional and the hankooks have to be installed with a certain side out. Car was dangerous at highway speeds. Bought matching hankook fronts and have been happy ever since.
