Already cracks in my stock tires?? Wtf!!

So I'm about to install my Yokohama stock Advan tires back on and I noticed that all four tires have cracks in them. It looks like dry cracks. WTF. Does anyone know why this could have happened? Can I still use them? What about the warranty?

I had my winter tires on and the stocks were in my in my shed for only 3 months out of the sunlight and rain

Are the cracks on the sidewalls? Do you use tire shine?

Red__Zed 03-27-2011 02:53 PM

what kinda cracks?

Did you store them where they were exposed to the cold?

Zerafian 03-27-2011 07:55 PM

Get some pics up please

i think he's talking about physical cracks at the base of each of the treads. it seems to happen from defective tire injection material. ive seen this happen on one of my earlier tires long time ago on my dd.

i recommend replacing them under warranty. either dealer warranty or the tire manufacturer's warranty.

The marks are in between the treads. I'll try to post up some pics later.

Yes, they were stored in the cold out of sunlight however in my shed. But I have another set(same Yokohama tires) along side of it and they are fine.

Storing them in the cold shouldn't cause the problem.

I'll bet discount tire will prorate them 4u

on a lot of tires it will cause them to fail prematurely.

really? cause my dd sees 0F frequently in the winter and no issues... my garage is unheated so my Z and G all see sub 30F in the coldest of winter.

Millions of cars endure long winters without premature tire failures...

The vast majority of which aren't running summer tires:rolleyes:

It depends on the compound used for the tire, but the Neova's must be stored above 14F. The RA-1's need to be stored above freezing.

Tires are also much more prone to drying out when stored in a cold area, which causes the cracking. Any tire that is not being used runs the risk of drying out, but it is much more likely if it is stored in the cold.

Along these same lines, as Im looking to remove my winter tires and wheels soon, what conditions are best for storage? I plan to just pop them off and store them wheel and tire.

My options are:
Garage - temperate climate, not too cold or hot
Attic - gets super hot when its hot out, cold when cold
Basement - basically room temperature, but can get humid

Also, should I lower/raise the PSI to a certain level?

Thanks everyone for the help. Here are the pics of my tires. Let me know what you think.

BTW, I'm gonna swap my winter tires for my summer tires in a day or two. Should I put these cracked ones on or should I put on my second set? Reason why I ask is because I'm gonna call yokohama or nissan about these tires and I am not sure if they should be on my car or not. What do you guys think?

Hope this helps.
