light tires?

everyone is very concerned with wheel weights(me included) , but what are some of the lightest tires we can run to help with unsprung weight?

jetguy 02-02-2011 11:29 AM

20% less weight: Revolutionary ultra-lightweight concept tire from Dunlop with DuPont? KevlarŪ technology

dunno if this helps, but my 305/30/19 RE-11 weighs a pound or two less than the Stock 275 rear.

kevlar replacing steel belt seems like it is the key to lightness in tires. anyone know what tires use this tech?

Well that's good to know. And also considering the wheels I have. Plus the lugs. I might of saved about 2-3lbs. Per wheel.

Apparently Yokohama S.Drive tires are quite light according to Car and Driver.

All the obsession with saving weight, yet getting a tire with marginal grip?

Unfortunately, it does seem like the stickier tires tend to be heavier :(

I guess first identify the ones that offer max grip, and then compare and contrast the weights.

good idea jordo. maybe a tirerack guy can chime in

op- you bring up a good point. the RE050A's are pretty heavy tires that's for sure!

Lightweight also can't make up for the lack of grip

No, but if you have two tires that are very close, the lighter one may be the winner.

For example, if memory serves, R-615's tend to be heavier than Kumho XS's, but they perform about the same (actually, the XS's outperform the Azenis).
