TPMS and Volk - Any success?

Almost 2 years ago my tire installer was not successful squeezing in the TPMS and adapter to the valve stem. The set screw was too short, so he ended up leaving it out. This time around I'm thinking about getting a whole new set of valve stems for the GT-S wheels and try to hunt for a set screw that's a bit longer.

What do you guys think? Any other suggestions?

Not sure about how these actual install. Hope to find out this weekend. There just going to take the one off my stock and transfer to my new wheels. So do you really think you need to get all new ones?

which wheels did you get?

you may or may not need them depending on the valve stems location.

Ooh... I faintly read about those. If it works great for you, then that'll be money spent on something better!

cool!

I got the AME tracer tm o2.

370Z JT 01-16-2011 06:31 PM

Nice! Will keep these in mind as I hear SSR wheels are not compatible with the oem sensors.

nice wheels! hopefully they'll fit the tpms but hardly ever these multipiece wheels will ever accept the sensor at the factory location

you are correct! SSR wheels are not compatible. i had the MS1 before and needed to run tpms straps.

The way it was explained to me is my wheels are going to have two valve stems. Which I've seen before. The tpms one is going to be in the inside of the wheel.

ahhh, that's good! the wheels i just sold has 2 holes also. works flawlessly btw! i just ordered some new wheels but can't be drilled for some reason and i'll be doing that strap kit/adapter again.

Zat_Zuma 01-17-2011 01:45 PM

bands and flattened wire clips ........ perfect flush fit

SPOHN 01-17-2011 06:54 PM

We'll still have to see if they'll work on these wheels. If not I'll do the bands.

Nitrouz 01-17-2011 08:45 PM

some Volks are TPMS compatible...such as the GT30's I had with my GTR.

chuckd05 01-17-2011 09:21 PM

hmm I have the same wheels as you Digi... I took my set out of my rays before I sold them, than I noticed the path the ones on the volks take...

Someone PMed me a link to some adapter

Thanks, Chuck! Is it confirmed that these valve stems will work with our wheels? It looks like an elegant solution. The ones FP sent me were the $35 bracket adapters. When wedged between the rubber washer and valve stem, my installer had difficulty tightening the screw to hold the valve stem in place.

Also, am I supposed to keep the valve stem caps on as well?

tsolin01 02-01-2011 12:54 AM

I just ordered a set Volk GT-S's and it looks like the 90 degree iForged adapters should work fine. Here's a thread I found on installing those $35 bracket adapters

Finally, TPMS Solution for Multi-piece wheels (maybe others) - RX8Club.com

I wonder why your installer had issues with the screw. I'm going to get the 90 degree iForged ones and use those. I would think with or without valve stem caps, it shouldn't matter.

docaam 02-01-2011 11:45 PM

In my previous Volks SF winning I used these 90deg adaptors, works fine after some initial fitments as, I was having a small leak after first install but then they torqued it correctly and was fine. Just a special precaution is needed as there isint that much space between tmps and tire so if you run on less air it can damage the tmps.

Now in Volks GT-30 there are two holes so one for Vokls valve stems and one for stock TMPS :)

The screw was a bit on the short side when adding in the adapters, so within the limited time frame that we had it was difficult to press down and screw it in. Without the adapters it went on fine, they left it out.

RCZ 02-02-2011 10:38 PM

I just installed TPMS on my Volk CE28N's No problem whatsoever.

tsolin01 02-02-2011 11:05 PM

I believe the issue only comes up on the 2 piece wheels with the 90 degree valve stems. Although it looks like you can order versions with 2 holes for valve stems now.

My wheels should have arrived today but this winter storm is a bastard

tsolin01 02-09-2011 10:07 PM

Just got my wheels and apparently they are the version with 2 holes for valve stems so I don't need the adapter after all :yum:

DIGItonium 02-10-2011 07:18 AM

Oh drats I thought they were discontuing the GT-S line over a year ago because I didn't get a good selection. FP could not order +30mm for the fronts either so I have been stuck with spacers up front.

Yea I was lucky enough that FP still had one set in stock since Nov. with the right offsets +30 front, +8 rear. Getting tires put on tomorrow and will probably have some pics up this weekend. :happydance:

Ah gotcha! My wheels are formula silver and had to be special ordered, which is probably the reason why I couldn't get it in +30mm up front. What tires did you get? My next set is probably 255/40 and 285/35 to offset the height difference with the Swift springs (i.e., reduce likelihood of the FI cans from scraping).

370Ztune 02-10-2011 12:57 PM

A lot of the newer production Rays/Volk wheels are TPMS ready. For example, before you couldn't use GT-Cs with TPMS sensors, but recently Rays changed to the previously mentioned "dual hole" design that allows for mounting of the TPMS sensor in inside of the barrel of the wheel.

If you guys are having any issues or have any questions with regard to fitting TPMS to a particular wheel (with the exception of ROTAs or other replica wheels), don't hesitate to contact me.

I ended up getting Continental ExtremeContact DWS for the tread life primarily and good reviews in all weather conditions. I went with the NISMO sizes, 245/40 front and 285/35 rear. I'm also planning to get swift springs (have them on order) and I'm definitely dreading the scrapes since I have an FI exhaust too lol

I've been tracking my driving habits lately and I don't really see any spots where I'll be scraping at all. I rarely even encounter speed bumps and usually avoid them anyway if I do.

Yep, what Nitrouz said- many later Volk models, like the newer GTS Phantoms, are engineered to be TPMS compatible.

I used the iForged 90 degree adapters on my GT-S wheels with no major issues; they worked. The only issue is that the o-ring/seal on the iForged valve-stem gets stretched pretty good. My tire shop recommended replacing the valve-stem or o-rings each time I replaced my tires. I actually think the butterfly adapter works better, and eliminates this issue. I would not use bands; there are much better solutions (I would have a machine shop tap a second hole in each wheel like Volk does now before I used bands).
