285/35 rear but 255/35 or 255/40 for the front?

It is getting time to replace the stock tires and I plan to go with the Hankook Ventus v12. I cannot decide if it would be better to go with the smaller diameter 255/35 or the taller 255/40 for the front? Do you want your front tires a little taller or a little smaller (diameter) than the rear? I tried search but couldn't find the answers I was looking for. Thanks for the help! :tiphat:

Yes you want a taller tire in the front.

I ran a 305/30/19 rear
and a 265/305/19 front

i am running a 255/40/19 up front and everyone said that its too beefy. so i dunno what hte general consensus is. i can see why people like running the lower profile tires when they replace, but they look whimpy without a pretty sizable drop/

Is this on the Stock Ray's wheels???????

FuszNissan 08-30-2010 10:17 AM

No, but I know people have increased their widths on the stock rays.

And I meant 265/35..sorry

255/40/19 are closer to the stock wall height/diameter. 265 series might be a little much for what you need.

Here's a good calculator:

Thanks for the help guys. I am going to be running these on the factory 19" rays with some spacers. I was messing with the calculator and that is when my question came up about the front tires. The 285/35 rears are going to be 26.9 tall and if I went with a 255/40 front then they would come in right at 27.03. If I went with a 255/35 front, it would come in at 26.03. Since I now know you want a taller tire in the front than the rear, it sounds like the 255/40 up front would be the best match with the 285/35 rear tires.

I am running 275/35-19 on the front and 305/30-19 on the rear with 15mm spacers up front and 20mm out back. I spent this past weekend going up Mt. Lemmon and up to Kitt Peak in the Tucson area and everything was great with the wider tires. I am running Hankook V-12's. Here's a pic of my setup.

the 255/40/19 is the closest to factory spec, but is definitely a bit taller.

Thanks for the info and pic. Looks great! Since this is my wifes dd and my weekend toy, I am going to go with the 285's out back instead of the 305's. That is why I am trying to find the best front pair to go with them but still a little wider than stock...

racerxj17 08-30-2010 07:15 PM

im running 255/35/19 and 285/25/10 in the rear, RE-11's. rather have slightly smaller, than larger tire up front. it looks great, could be happier with the tires, or the sizes (other than they create alot of tire dust on the back......)
