Mag Seat Style Lug Nuts

Hi everyone! First non-introductory post here. I've been looking around at the other spacer/wheel stud/lock nut threads out there and I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

Recently I put v2 nismo rays wheels on my 2013 base model 370z. Now I want to install 5mm spacers on the front & back of the car. I've been hearing mixed things on wether or not I would need extended studs with this setup. I've decided to err on the side of caution and install the 10mm longer-than-stock studs that come with the 5mm Z1 hub centric spacers. With some quick maths I can determine that there will be 5mm more stud sticking out of the wheel after I install the spacers.

Question 1: can my OEM lugs accommodate 5mm extra stud?

Question 2: Who makes a nice set of extended mag seat/washer/OEM style lug nuts? I'd prefer closed end and black.

You do not need extended studs with 5 mm spacers.

These are the only black OEM style lug nuts I have ever seen, but I do not believe they are any longer then yours. I have read of people cutting teh tops off teh stock nuts to accommodate longer studs, but I realize that is not what you are looking for.

You should probably just go back to the stock studs.

EDIT: Read johnxxx post below before ordering these. I have another link below that has the proper lug nuts.

Okay. Though I'm considering going up to 10 mm spacers (I haven't installed anything yet). In that case I can just use 10 mm extended studs and the lugs you linked.

I also read somewhere you shouldn't get 5 mm spacers with OEM wheels because the spacers aren't hub centric. Is this true?

cooltoy 06-13-2020 05:21 PM

10 mm spacers would be the uppermost limit for stock studs. You definitely want hubcentric.

Not sure about your last question, but I googled 5 mm hubcentric spacers and there seem to be lots of hubcentic 5 mm spacers on the market.

Way too much trouble for such a small spacer. Those are for brake clearance

If u actually wanna change the look u need 20-25mm

I'm not sure how the v2 rays look on the stock nismo.. but on my car the 10.5s fill the wheel well out pretty well. I've read the whole 20-25 mm spacer thing but I just feel like I'll have too much poke if I run a spacer that big. Not sure if it's because I'm running these wheels on a base Z or not.

Do both cars have the same distance from the hub to the edge of the fender?

cooltoy 06-13-2020 08:40 PM

Pretty similar.

As others have stated, OEM studs are fine with a 5mm spacer

however, i will say again:
5mm is barely noticeable and you won't be remotely flush

V2 Nismo body is the same as every other 370Z EXCEPT that the stupid little flares actually give less clearance due to how they are attached on the inside

save your cash and do it right

also, read this damn thing:

Cooltoy -> Your link caught my eye reading this post. I actually just received the black version of these lug nuts from Z1 and these are NOT the same size as the OEM lug nuts that I got with my Nismo wheels... in fact, they are about 1/16 of an inch in width and height SMALLER than the OEM ones. I was hoping they simply just shipped me the wrong ones but they seem to be advising that these are the correct ones for my wheel. I'm currently working thru this issue with Z1 having to send them pictures. :shakes head:

Doesn't anybody make colored lug nuts to fit our Nismo Rays???

...and yes, before you say it, I need to get myself a metric caliber tool.:rofl2:

I see. Good to know. No one has reported any issues with these in the past. I will keep that in mind. Sorry for the trouble.

There are these ones, but no guarantee you will nor run into the same issue. Maybe ask them to measure for you prior to ordering.

Or you can have your silver ones powder coated. That has been done before.

Or plastic caps.

PS: I have added a warning to my first post.

Another Z1 success story

Joe at ZSpeed has correct OEM lugs in black - I'm running a set on my V1 Nismo wheels :twocents:

The link cooltoy posted above is the correct set from ZSpeed

Thanks CoolToy and no worries. Yeah, I'm a little surprised how Z1 can continue to sell and advertise these lugs fitting our Nismo Rays when clearly they are smaller and can be dangerous for people who use them. They fact that they fit the stud thread but are not snug against the wall of the hole of the wheel (like I mentioned off by 1/16" ) is troublesome. Not only doesn't it center on the wheel correctly (needless to say it can move around on the wheel ) but the wall thickness that fits around the stud is thinner and most likely doesn't have the same strength. (we all seen pictures of wrong lugs being sheared off ) In talking with their service dept and customer service I was promised a call back from them with these same concerns I share with the forum. I never did get a call back but I did get an email back with a prepaid RMA return and a promise for a full refund once received. I'm guessing they don't want to provide an explanation as this would show/prove liability... I do hope that they stop advertising / selling these fitting our Nismo wheels and pull them from the shelves.

Thanks JarBlue! I am reaching out and asking Joe @ZSpeed about the sizing of his lug nuts so I'm expecting an answer soon. Appreciate yours and Cooltoys help on this subject and I'm sorry for hijacking the OP thread. In looking at ZSpeed's description of their lug nuts from CoolToys link I guess says it all... "Unlike other aftermarket lugs sold, ZSpeed lugs are the correct OE size for proper wheel fitment, Others sell cheaper lugs that the shoulder diameter is too small and will not center the wheel correctly."

Hey ZX_man... just to let you know that I got my new set of lug nuts from Zspeed and they are perfect! You should be happy with yours as well. They are the exact same size as OEM.

Another thing that bothered me with the Z1 lug nuts was they really weren't packaged properly and the nuts came loose in the FedX package and when I looked inside it was black like the paint was coming off! When I handled some of them my fingers turned black too. Check out the picture I took of the envelope so you can only imagine.

The lug nuts that I got from Zspeed are not like this...their paint doesn't rub off...lol.
