Pothole Damage

3 Attachment(s)
I just got home (past 2 a.m.) from a towing truck. Long story but I just want to take care of it in the morning.

So I hit a pothole on the highway and got a warning of tire pressure few minutes later. The first tire I checked was TOTALLY flat (passenger rear). Putting air came out immediately from a hole on the sidewall. The passenger front rims are broken. Which is what scared me.

My question is, what do I do? If the damage is so bad that it broke my rims, do I bring to dealer to check other damages or just change the tires and rim? I wouldn't know what a damage suspension feels like when driving. I'm short of cash and wondered if there are things to have to tell the dealers or tire shop check. I honestly don't want either to rip me off since I'm broke now. So who do I go to and what do I tell them?

Thanks in advance. I'll call Tire Rack in the morning for the rims and hopefully get a response of what else to do.

Sorry to see this be thankful you are ok but from my own driving experience in New York a lot of the roads there are awful. Definitely get to know the roads you will be driving on is a good rule of thumb there so you can avoid some possible scenarios driving. Whatever side you drove over if passenger side you may have to replace both wheels because driving over a pothole can put a not only bend your wheels but they can make them out of round and the balance of the wheel can be off. Look forward to replacing both tires as potholes can and will destroy your tires. If the damage is that bad then you definitely knocked off your alignment and I would look for a reputable and competent shop to have an alignment done immediately. Hope you did not damage your struts and shocks they are expensive to replace. My advice would be bring your Z to a reputable shop you trust to have them diagnose any possible damage and go from there. A Nissan dealership service department is an option if you trust them that is?

Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. It’s Pothole season in NY. They literally pop up overnight.

If you broke a suspension part you would know it immediately. You probably got lucky there, but you definitely will need an alignment.

If you bought your tires from tire rack, you most likely have road hazard protection. That will take a little bit of the sting out of the new tire price.

Damage such as this can be claimed on insurance. An 18-wheeler in front of me tossed up gravel that took out my A/C condenser coil. Insurance paid for it. It took about a week to get the go-ahead, but they paid for a rental, too, so...
At least call and ask your insurance agent.

What kind of wheel?

SouthArk370Z 03-02-2020 11:59 AM

Modern suspensions are pretty tough and wheels tend to be fragile. There's a chance all you need to replace is the wheel and tire plus get the alignment checked. Any good tire/alignment shop will be able to inspect and tell if you did any other damage.

Thanks all. This morning I woke up to re-inspect damage. So 2 of my rims are damaged not just one. But the other wheel is just bent. My Tire Rack warranty is only for 2 years but doesn't cover rims anyways. Right now it's at tire shop so we'll see what they say.

I'm interested in this too

Verde Parallax.

At $127 per wheel on Tire Rack, I wouldn't bother with insurance.

JARblue 03-03-2020 07:17 AM

Well that's what I would expect to happen to $127 wheels. You get what you pay for. I can pretty much guarantee stock rims wouldn't have busted like that in that same scenario. That's not to say the stock rims won't ever get bent, but they won't be damaged like a cheap wheel. This should be a good lesson for you.

They are 20" Parallax. I paid $195 for each in 2016. And no they're not as solid as the stocks.

Listen for squeaking from the lower ball joints for the first few weeks after you get it rolling. We hit a huge pothole in the G that took out the drivers side. No tire or wheel damage(forged Rays can take a hit) and no immediate noticeable change but a week or 2 later it had a bad squeak anytime it went over the slightest bump. Unserviceable ball joint too, the lower control arm had to be replaced :shakes head:
