New Tire Help
So it's come time to get new tires for the 2015 Z, and I'm looking for some help in sizing. Car suspension/height is stock.
Long story short the current tires were originally on Avant Garde M550 wheels I had a ton of problems with. So I pulled the tires off, and got TSW Bathurst wheels instead - which are fantastic. Currently Running: Front: 19 x 8.5 +15 255/35 ContiExtremeDW Rear: 19 x 10.5 +27 305/30 ContiExtremeDW I'm looking at either RE-11 or new PS4S in same sizes, or going to 245/40 front and 285/35 rear. Car is my DD, and is NA (so know the 305 in the rear is probably slowing me down a bit). Any thoughts & input would be most appreciated. |
Why would it slow you down?
Cause if you're worried that much about the wider tire "slowing" you down you might want to go to an 18 |

Why are you thinking change to PS4 or re11? |
i would go with S04's if dd. just run stock nismo size on ur Z.
the DW's are lighter than the S04's so u may/may not feel da weight. S04's are great tires and economical. |

As for the reason to change -- they're not making them anymore. Continental replaced them with the ExtremeContact Sport model, and they are a decent amount more expensive than the outgoing ExtremeDW. The new price bracket puts them so close to the PS4S and RE-11 that I figured I'd rather try one of those tires given their reputations. I'm leaning towards the PS4S since I DD my Z. But I could be swayed to the RE-11 as in Houston I don't really have to think about cold weather performance. More up in the air on sizing... |

I don't want to upset the cart, but I have the Hankook Ventus V12's (replaced the origianal Potenzas) and have loved every minute of them. When I DD, they are quiet, smooth and are great in all wet or dry conditions. For the few times I track the car per year, the handling is great and predictable. They were relatively inexpensive (vs Michelin or Continental) and are wearing like iron. When these go, I will replace them with the same thing.
Of course, every one is different and their driving style/modifications are not the same, so I am just pointing out what has worked for me. Keep us posted as to what you ultimately decide for YOUR CAR... |
Bridgestone Potenza or Continental Extreme Contact are both good tires for a daily drive. I've also heard good thing about Hankook, but I have no experience with brand.
As for tire sizing, unless your tracking I'd just stick to the OEM sizes 245/255 and 275/285. Maybe it's a male thing, but bigger heavier tires is not always better, especially for acceleration. |
The older model super sport are really price reduced right now. I just bought a set for 241 a piece from americas tire.

OP, there are many, many posts about tires, tire size, tire comparisons, etc. Do a search and you will come to the conclusion that there are about 4-5 tires that are super popular with the Z crowd here. The Michelin PSS and newer PS4S seem to be at the top end along with the Bridgestone RE-11 and S04's. Go with the proven and most popular tires or you may regret your purchase. I don't believe that the combo you have right now 255/305 is bad at all.

PS4S are great tires!! We've done an install on those tires on a GTR.

These will fit but there are plenty of size options and variations of the Michelin sticky tires. I use mine for Autocross and weekend warrior, not DD. The tire I listed will get about 10,000 miles of street time but reduce Autocross times by @2 seconds. They are also expensive. If you don't drive hard and use it as a DD you can buy any tire brand or style, if you want better gas mileage put skinny tires on, if you want performance, use a wider tire. The vast majority on this forum are RE11 fanboys but there are plenty of great tire brands like Nitto that get no air time here. Take a close look at Nitto, they make excellent tires NT555 G2 and the INVO are superb tires for fun, looks and performance. The INVO is a sticky tire that is also very quiet, one of my main complaints about the Michelin Pilots is they are noisy. |
If you're running the pilot sport cup and think that's a great tire I'd try a softer stickier one, if running street class the re-71r if prepared Hoosier or nitto nt01. I guarantee you'll think differently about the pilots. I've ran them and they need a lot of heat to stick and wouldn't heat up fast enough for autocross

Thanks for all the input on this.
After reading a little more now I am torn between the PS4S and the new Conti ExtremeContact Sport. After reading a review on the Conti is seems they really made a notable improvement over the Extreme DW, and they're less than the PS4S. I haven't been able to find a head to head comparison with the PS4S, but think the Conti still might have the edge in wet performance which matters for me in Houston rain. |
Both tires are very similar in specs. and performance. The two biggest pluses for the PS4S, IMHO; they are Michelins and are made in the USA. The Conti's are made in Portugal (fronts) and Czech Republic (rears). Yes, the PS4S's are more expensive.

Getting close to buying the new tires, and I need a thought on this sizing. I can still get the original Pilot Super Sport in my area. Knowing the run bigger than my current DWs -- how would this sizing work:
Front on 8.5 wheel 245/35/19 Rear on 10.5 wheel 295/30/19 Figure if I can save a fews buck on the outgoing ones, the PSS will be superior to the DWs I have now... |

It's funny looking at the specs of these versus the DWs on now (255f/305r) -- the PSS 245/295 is a wider tire than the DW per the TireRack specs... |
Just wanted to update here -- after going to Discount Tire they didn't have any more of the older super sports in my sizing -- so I went with the new Conti Extreme Contact Sports.
Amazingly my old Conti DWs were put on the car with 8.8k miles, and last until 34.7k. I was pretty impressed with that for performance tires. Rears were gone, but the fronts still had plenty of life left in them. That being said these new Conti Extreme Contact Sports so far feel like a HUGE step up from the DWs to me. Particularly in cornering ability & feedback -- much less mushy. So far I only have a couple hundred miles on them, but will report back once I have some more time with them. |
