rim painting question

Ok, i am probably going to get flamed for this.. but... i was thinking instead of powdercoating my rims i could just tape off the tires and get some caliper paint and paint them myself.. anyone have any experience trying to do this? will it work or will it fail miserably

How to refinish wheels using Dupli-Color wheel paint | Video « Wonder How To

GOOD LUCK!:hello:

I have a customer that will be bringing me a set of corvette wheels to powdercoat that tried the diy method first. In the end, its costing him extra to have them coated due to the extra work required on my part. He was not successful at all, with lots of chips and peeling.

Now if you were to take them to a bodyshop to have them professionally sprayed, you would probably get better results, but it may wind up costing more than powdercoat.

I used spray cans on mine and everything is working out perfectly. However, Mike is right PC'ing your wheels is much more durable... I took my time and painted mine right.

Steps:
1: Clean Wheel! Clean it GOOD!
2: Get Scotchbright and scuff the wheel finish inside and out.
3: Clean the wheel again
4: Inspect and repeat as necessary
4a: Tape up wheel as desired
5: 1st coat of automotive primer (I prefer grey)
6: 2nd coat of primer (thicker than the first)
7: Inspect the wheel again and let it fully dry
8: Make any clean ups as necessary in primer
9: Make sure clear of dust and dirt
10: 1st light coat of satin black
11: let it dry
12: 2nd thicker coat (let it fully dry)
13: Final coat of satin black
14: When Dry apply 1st light coat of satin clear
15: when almost dry take a painters cotton cloth and lightly wipe down the wheel
16: repeat one more time
17: let the rim fully dry and inspect it
18: make changes as needed...

It took me over 6 hours to do 4 wheels... lets just say the next day I could barely walk from being bent over lol

I used Automotive Primer and Satin Spray paint and clear

ive done it in the past. not too bad as long as you know how to spray paint. use a rich coat.

ideally you'd want to get an airbrush vs some rattle can but it works.

Do you have any pictures of your wheels? How did you spray your primer on? Did you take off the dusts and the sand like particles on the wheels?

I was going to do a full DIY but it was taking wayyyyy too long! I will see what pics I do have... Also the wheels are for sale with tires so if u want to see the finished product try the private for sale threads. Note the wheels are dirty when I took the pics.
