Repair or buy New?

Hello all,

I have bent one of my Forgestar wheels.

Option One:
- Repair the barrel and face of wheel = about $200.
- Re-powdercoat = $100

Option Two:
- Buy a new wheel for $450

Repair and save $150

FPenvy 09-16-2015 10:10 AM

sell wheels buy a brand that doesn't bend when you hit a speed bump.

all I've seen is bad stuff about forgestars.

GZ3 09-16-2015 10:13 AM

repair.... im sure you can find a cheaper option no? We have a shop here that does FULL reconditioning for 150

MAYBE full recondition would be $200, but i have a 2-stage powdercoat which none of the wheel refinishers want to touch. :shakes head:

So... i'm left looking for any powdercoater that can handle a 2-stage, and haven't seen one in Chicagoland yet.

TerribleONE 09-16-2015 10:31 AM

Id buy a new one or get something different all together.. What did you hit?

Pothole... Chicago infrastructure :shakes head:

I'd like to avoid the 4-new-wheels route. As i'm saving for go-fast parts

DOOMMONKEY777 09-16-2015 11:12 AM

Just, new!

kenchan 09-16-2015 12:47 PM

buy new

mishuko 09-16-2015 01:38 PM

imo i'd buy new... in fact porbably a pair... would be weird because 1 new and 1 old rim may wear differently or differences and such.

GZ3 09-16-2015 01:57 PM

yea after reading the new info...id just buy a new one

Zbrah 09-16-2015 03:18 PM

File a claim with the city and have them cover a new replacement for you.

New

I'm a NEW kinda guy. I'd always be looking for flaws on a repaired wheel.
It would kill me if it wasn't perfect.

The question is, how bad did you beat it up? That will determine if the wheel can be fixed or scrapped. You never told us the condition.

kenchan 09-17-2015 11:17 AM

a 1cm scratch is enough for me to buy a new wheel. its completely ruined, worthless.

b15 09-17-2015 11:55 AM

New, different isn't much. I would assume that the repaired barrel would be more susceptible to being bent again?

A scratch is ALOT different from a bent barrel!

Also I think you answered your own question. LOL

Sell the wheels for cheap.

By forged rays.

And never crack a wheel again

ha ha i like how you think its just this wheel that does it
Any wheel will crack if hit hard enough or put under extreme stress, the amount of Forgestar wheels sold vs Failure in percentage is low

Cor wheels on a GTR and cracked 6 out of 7 spokes after a few track days

^^ What wheels?

zmanelite 09-17-2015 07:36 PM

I believe they were the COR Precise

GetYourWheels 09-18-2015 01:00 PM

Get a new one! Just responded to your PM with a better deal than the $450

roplusbee 09-19-2015 03:39 AM

Forgestar wheels are ultimately for riding around a looking nice. COR has a performance lineup and totes a pretty big client base. That doesn't make either of them immune to a catastrophic event. Hitting a pothole at cruising speed could be fatal to tires, wheels and suspension. Hitting the extensions on the track (at who knows what speed)................I am sure that you know where this is going.

On that note, I would take Rays/Volk over COR anyday. But then I would also look into Work, WedSport, and HRE as well. But continue with Forgestar talk, please.

Buy a new wheel.
I'm a stickler for a repair to be perfect.
What is the guarantee that the repair and powdercoat
with match your other wheels perfectly?
I had a similar situation when I owned a 350Z. My wife badly
scraped a front wheel. I just bought a new one due fears of
the repair not matching.
Bud,in the long run,how long to you plan on keeping your Z?
150 bucks is not a lot of money.

/Angelo350Z/ 09-19-2015 07:16 AM

If I have to powdercoat 1 wheel, I'll powedercoat all 4 just to make sure they all match. So yeah, just get a new wheel.
