RIM Cleaning - Please Help

How Often Do You CLEAN Your Z - Rims?

How Do You Do It? AND What Do You Use?

Your Advise Is Appreciated - My Z Looks GREAT / Rims NOT So Much:tiphat:

I use regular car wash soap with a wash mitt. I find that using regular car wash soap with clear coated wheels to be about the best. You can get a multitude of different brushes if you like. I just do it by hand.

Leingod 09-08-2015 07:36 AM

Soap and water...sometimes with a wash cloth while taking a shower.

Wait.... you mean Z wheels!! Ohhhh.......

Soap and water... sometimes I'll use a MF towel.

For questions about detailing and paint maintenance/repair, search for Junkman2008's comments and videos. If this site's search feature doesn't work well for you, try adding "site:the370z.com" to your search string at any of the major search engines.

The best wheel cleaner I've ever discovered is WD-40. Use soap and water afterwards or the residue will draw dust.

I can see putting some WD-40 (or similar, oil-based product) on a rag to clean stubborn dirt, but don't think spraying it around brakes and tires is a good idea. YMMV

kenchan 09-08-2015 10:33 AM

i use rc car motor spray to remove tar and stains. no need to wash, just wax afterwards.

but on my hobbycars, i rarely need to use harsh chemicals. just QD and done. oh wait, op was supposed to search.

kenchan 09-08-2015 10:34 AM

hate giving away free answers!

i also wipe off the overspray on my rotors and clean the calipers while im at it.. :p

Spray it on a paper towel and then wipe the rim. I've been doing it for years with no issues whatsoever.

AutO'Rileys has wheel brushes for less than $10. That's what I use to get the barrels cleans.

RyanR 09-09-2015 03:31 PM

Soap+water, dry, then wax with TW Ice = Done

Dude! You're mind's in the gutter, glad I'm not the only one....

Crypto2k 09-09-2015 05:44 PM

Adams deep wheel cleaner, brushes for surface and calipers, wheel woolie for behind spokes and their turbo stick to get all the crap that builds up on the drums you normally can't reach. Regular car wash soap should work too *if* you keep up on it. Finish with detailing spray or wax to make next time easier.
Ps. I have Works Gnosis 20" wheels so slightly diff needs from a design and reach perspective.

How Often - Do You Clean Rims???

1- Every Ride
2- Every Week
3- Every Once In A While...:ugh2:

scottIN 09-10-2015 01:54 PM

The easy answer is this: Your wheels are painted- just like the rest of your car. If you wouldn't use it on your hood, don't use it on your wheels.

So the soap and water answers (as well as others) are correct. Have embedded brake dust? Clay or B&T remover.

1 or every other ride. i do a finger test. if i can remove dust, then it will be QD'ed.

Sonex works great. Apply while scrubbing with a brush then rinse off with water. I use shop towels to dry the wheels after. I wanna get a leaf blower heard that's the best way to dry off after washing.

I've always used a leaf blower to dry my vehicles. Cheap, works wonderfully, and really cuts down on water sports. Win, win.

God-Speed 09-12-2015 07:36 AM

One thing that I have always used is an air compressor with an adaptor that easily fits between the spokes that I can get at the brake calibers to blast out brake dust that has built up. I then use detail spray on a micro fiber towel to follow up. Just make sure you don't forget to get the inter barrels of the wheels as clean as the outside of the rims, other wise the wheels are not clean.
