225/50R18 tyre help

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here so i'm sorry if this question has been answered elsewhere, i did try the search but couldn't find anything.

My car has the above tyre size for the front wheels and was hoping if people knew of alternative tyres from the Yoko's which were nice and grippy... Seems like an odd size and not many tyre companies make them. I am trying to avoid at all costs to change the rims.

thanks in advance,

Brian

First, Welcome! :hello:

Tire Rack shows 20 tire options in that size.

225/50-18 tires at Tire Rack

Can't tell from your post if you did or didn't like the Yokos and if your trying to get something different out of your next set or trying to match them.

Looks like the Yoko's are the most expensive choice on that list, but if they worked well for you why not go with them again?

If you want to go a different route this time, there are reviews for the other tires listed all over the internet.

Personally I like the Yoko's. I moved my stock rear 245s to to front and put 295s on the rear on wider aftermarket rims. Working great for me.

Forgot to mention that if you plan on staying with Max Performance Summer tires (and why wouldn't you) then it looks like it's the Yokos or the Bridgestones.

Not a lot of choice after all - at least according to Tire Rack.

Thanks for the reply mate,

as you mentioned being in Australia I will be sticking to the summer tyres. I saw them Bridgestones but for some bizarre reason they don't bring them to Australia...

I don't like the turn in feel of the yoko's but from what i found in AUS my other options are Kuhmo and Hankook... I might end up changing the rims...

I asked this question ages back, I finally have an answer to share, for everyone with 18" z wheels you can use Falken Ziex ZE912 tyres. They're good, economical and yeah pretty good.

OMGWTFBBQ 03-03-2010 11:06 AM

It might be just me, but why not try out a wider tire? You're on the OEM 18" wheels right?

tbonesteak 03-03-2010 11:28 AM

^^agreed.

gumpy 03-03-2010 03:15 PM

can you do that without the tyre falling off the rims? i did not know you could safely do that.

OMGWTFBBQ 03-03-2010 04:43 PM

...... I wouldn't have suggested it if it wasn't possible. :icon14:

well then be a bit more specific and less condesending.

larger tyres in terms of aspect ratio or treadwidth? and for both how much larger can you go before it's unsafe because i'd imagine putting 255 width tyres on 225 wheels isn't ideal...

You could probably go up to a 245 and still be ok. As far as aspect ratio just try and keep the overall diameter close to the same as the original size, that will probably mean stepping down to a 45 but I don't know for sure.

oh ok so 20mm oversize... thanks mate. 245/45R18's should have a very similar circumference.

Haha fine. That was a little mean. Let me rephrase that.

Your stock setup is this correct?
Front: 18x8 +43 225/50/18
Rear: 18x9 +15 245/45/18

Try this setup:
Front: Same wheels. 245/45/18
Rear: Same wheels. 275/40/18

I haven't checked if those tires come in the sizes I listed above, but it's a start.

Hope that helped.

Perfect. 18" stock fronts are a ridiculous fitment. A 50 aspect ratio tire is absolutely no good on a sports car. I'm on those rite now from oem 19s and the body roll and understeer compared to the 19s setup is way more pronounced.
