UpRev, buying a used cable

So, I don't really understand how the cable system works, so sorry for the stupid questions.

An acquaintance is selling the tuner version with the cable and he said the license is back on the cable.
The tuner version is the only version that you can use then resell when you're "done" right?
Do I need to register it to my my car, and does it cost anything to do that?
And how can I make sure that the license is back on the cable so I don't get ripped off?

Thanks in advance,
Andrew :tiphat:

Hey, I bought a used cable last year. Get him to send you a screen shot of the cable manager screen and it will say in bold green letters "License on Cable" and the serial numbers etc. See Here

A cable doesn't need to be the "Tuner" version to resell, but it is the only version that lets YOU do the tuning, any cable can have a licence on it, but only the tuner version lets you edit ROM's, other wise you have to go to a pro tuner for ROM's.

You don't need to do anything special to transfer the license to the car, it's done through the software and is completed on the first flash. It just sits in the cable until you are ready to flash the ROM, then it is on the car and no longer on the cable. If you want to sell the cable/license, UpRev or a pro tuner sends a file that flashes the car back to stock rom and puts the license back on the cable which you can then sell to anyone.

Hope this helps, I was confused initially as well.

^Thank you!!!
What I thought is that there is a license version that is forever married to a car, and that only the tuner version could be UNmarried.

In response to asking for a screenshot...

"In summary, without my nismo ecu, there is no way to show you, sorry if thats a deal breaker"

Should I still buy it and use PayPal as buyer protection?

He doesn't need his ECU, all you need is to plug the cable into a computer with Osiris loaded on it (free download from UpRev site), and it will show the license, no connection to the car needed.

That would make sense to me, lol
But I don't feel like pissing off the seller because I think their price is cheap
If PayPal will cover the risk, I don't mind

Trilitheum 12-21-2013 09:47 AM

That is a good price.

The only problem would be if there was no license on the cable convincing PayPal that you did get the cable but it didn't have a licence on it, have to make sure they understand the concept, the goods being received are not just the cable. The "significantly not as described" protection is at their discretion, and if they see you got the cable might be a hard sell to PayPal depending on their mood, but it doesn't make any sense why he would sell it without the licence on it as if he doesn't have his car it's no use to him.

He sent a pic, it says license on cable.
Osiris Pro: Disabled

That's ok right?

Trilitheum 12-21-2013 10:00 AM

Yup, that's for the tuner shops, as long as it says ROM Editor: Enabled its the tuner version.

Yep, awesome. Paid for it.

Glad I could help, confused the crap out of me in the beginning until I figured it all out.

DEpointfive0 12-21-2013 10:12 AM

Yeah it does, lol
They really should start simplifying by calling their cable a cable, I know Cipher sounds cool and it "justifies" $200, but it confuses the end user

Sorry to bump an ancient thread but I wanted to clarify. After a used cable is purchased, assuming the license is on it, all I need is to take it and my car to a tuner who already has the Tuner software right? I don't need to purchase the separate Tuner software myself, right?
