Uprev and Mac computer?

I have a Mac, if i order THe uprev software and cable will it work on my Mac? or do I have to have a PC for it to work?

zguynate 03-15-2012 09:18 AM

I'm pretty sure it only works on windows. Someone correct me if I'm wrong

If you dual boot your computer it will work. If you are just on Mac OS it will not.

I know all the guys at UPREV use Mac's, not sure what programs they use to allow it, but I know for a fact that they do....

Hey Vince , any chance the shop expansion will make the building reach from PA to MA?:/

Uprev 'Cipher' program is written using Microsoft library (.dll's), I'm sure it only runs on Microsoft Operating Systems. Unless Uprev has internal programs for Macs or they are using some Virtual programs to run the Cipher.

Would be good to have Cipher for Macs, probably can run it on IPOD/IPHONE.

You could dual boot using Parallels or VMware Fusion and run windows (you need to buy/own a copy) on your Mac. For the price I just went out and bought a cheap HP laptop to use for Uprev instead. I really have no interest in running windows on my Mac.

Just pick up a cheap laptop from Craigslist. I wouldn't even worry about the battery holding a charge for more than a few minutes. You can buy a power inverter for cheap.

They run Parallels at Uprev I believe which allows OS X but you can run Window programs without booting into a separate OS.
On the topic of the iOS software, I asked once before, they said it was something they are interested in. The issue is having to follow the rules of Apple and building a cable which goes from 30 pin to OBDII.

lol DUAL BOOT THE COMPUTER. Thats how they do it at uprev. If you have the newest mac OS you wont need parallel just a recent copy of Windows.

I doubt that. That'd be extremely counter-productive to the thought of using a Mac to begin with. More than likely they're running a virtual machine, like theDreamer and others have suggested.

Regardless, for someone without the knowledge and skills to run either a virtual machine or dual boot config, buying a cheap $300 laptop would be the best bet in my opinion.

speaking off the topic.

How is Dashcommand for Ipod and Iphone? Is this perfect replacement for standalone guages for tracking Boost, EGT, IAT, etc?

vividracing 03-16-2012 11:34 AM

I haven't had a chance to play with it yet. My bikes not OBD-II lol.

Maybe I can get the boss to buy the hardware and we can test it out on one of our project cars... hmmm.....

I boot my macbook into vista to run cipher. Works great. You can pick up a copy of windows pretty cheap now.

I know this post is very old, but i just wanted to keep everyone updated.

You CAN run UpRev without a virtual machine. The Mono framework works very well as a replacement for the .NET framework with Uprev (Mono is being used a lot in cross-platform software development), you will need to download the Mono framework, WineHQ, and lua libraries to run it but it runs very well on Wine/Mono.

Mono is very, very similar to the .NET framework required, you shouldn't have any issues, the only error i initially had was with their Lua .dll but I figured it out.

Download the most recent .pkg of Mono. Download the WineHQ staging or development .pkg (or if you're slightly tech savvy you can use homebrew and the terminal). Download the most recent Lua. And everything should run perfectly fine. (Also if you're curious about some of UpRev's source code, just import any of Uprev's .dll or .exe files into Xamarin Studio. I know using .NET you can direct edit using MSIL injection, I'm not familiar enough with Mono to know what the MSIL equivalent in Mono is)
