VVEL Tuning
The potential ability to program intake lift through the separate VVEL computer and the ECU looks exciting. Hopefully the code gets cracked so tuners can reprogram for more power. Even without reprogramming there seems to be some potential in making small mechanical adjustments. The fulcrum adjusting screws for the intake valves in the VVEL mechanism appear to offer some tuning potential. It looks like maximum intake lift and duration can be increased by uniformly tightening the fulcrum screws. Unfortunately we don’t have that same option with the exhaust valves as they are controlled by a more conventional camshaft. A small increase in intake lift might be significant in max power output even with the stock exhaust cam. I fully expect to see a lot more power developed from naturally aspirated VQ37VHR engines as we learn how to make them sing.

I would like to know if anyone has tried that already.
|
I wonder what the threshold is for blowing up your VVEL!
|
Dont think any one domestically even has ability to view, let alone alter the cam timing, it seems a very clever and self learning system, the Nissan ECU seems to be able to real time adjust timing, valve timing based of precise VE, temp, fuel inputs and KCFB, it really is an outstanding piece of kit from the factory.
That being said there will be great gains when the algorythm is finally cracked and proved. |
From what I've seen so far there are very little gains on a N/A system with a tune - esp if any bolt ons have been done. VVEL is my last hope to get some more significant gains out of the engine without forced induction.
|
I believe that Technosquare adjusts the VVEL with their tune.
|
I talked with Uprev today and they have no plans to create maps for the VVEL.
|
Really - no plans ? glad I went AP - I think that is a mistake
|
exhaust cams at least?

If you're expecting big numbers out of a NA tune DON'T. I see so many people expecting to see numbers rivaling a base turbo tune on a base or even modded NA motor. It just doesn't work that way. Most turbo tunes honestly gain their power from upping boost more than finding efficiency. I could see VVEL tuning rivaling a good intake cam at best. So thinkl better curve and 10-20 RWHP, but probably nothing better. I've seen the youtube video of the fulcrum screw adjustment, and every bone in my body wants to crank that sucker all the way down. However, I'll let someone else try it first.

400RWHP NA would be AWESOME. 500+ish is overkill and definitely requires opening that bad boy up.
|
I think the current goal should be 350 rear wheel HP with a tune plus bolt ons, seeing as with no tune and basic bolt ons we are seeing 325-330 on a dynojet. 400 seems a bit far for bolt ons with this car, but maybe in two or three years I will be wrong (lets hope). :D

i'm saying exhaust cam, tune, CAI, LTH, CBE, pulleys, flywheel.
a Turbonator would probably be too much to be streetable though. |
True, that is why currently with CBE, HFC, and CAI we are at 325-330.
Only problem I foresee though is someone to make these parts, LTH we are good on, flywheel we have plenty but that is really where it stops. Tunes are looking good, but needs more work. |
I will see what mine kicks out shortly, it will have intakes, test pipes, CB and a tune.
From looking at the rom there is power to be had, the fueling especially, maybe 5-10 WHP, cams will make a difference and an extra few rpm up top will also count. I think actual 'feel' will greatly improve with some tweaks here and there. I agree if you think N/A will react like a turbo car when it comes to tuning you will be very dissapointed. My goal is to match my last Sti on stock turbo and E85 on the same dyno , I have no chance on TRQ but HP we shall see, that baby made 335/365 before I upped the anty changed out the turbo and put down 403/420 on corn ;-) Id like to see >310 WHP on my Z and 270 WTQ, with that and the balance, manners this vehicle has it should be very fun for little dollar. Power is after all , only part of the equation. The total package of the Z made me leave the FI world in the first place. |
