Like Chuck said, Joe is mostly a Mazda guy. I wouldn't recommend his e-tune services due to the experience a number of forum members had. But I dropped my Z off at his shop personally for a drive tune, and I was very happy with the experience and results :twocents:

As far as I know, the main selling points that got me were the boost by gear control (eliminates need for boost controller), flex fuel that adapts to ethanol content (inline ethanol sensor tied to the harness to provide live input on ethanol content for adjustment), and also they have the true values for the VVEL, so you can actually change your intake cams' timing. I dunno by how much, but you can. UpRev has a "virtual cam" that pretends to mess with the intake cams- that's when I made the choice with Ecutek.

And yeah, there are the other benefits you've mentioned, the flat-foot shifting (i dunno how much that is actually needed), map switching on the fly, TRUE 2 STEP (UpRev, from what I understand, you have to have 2 maps, one that cuts fuel @ specified launch rpm, then you have to switch maps AS you launch. stupid IMO.) That, and majority of the reviews I've read (if not all of them) mention smoother throttle control, and usually an average of about 10 hp increase over UpRev with the same modifications.

If you're worried about it becoming a money pit, don't worry. I've got a latina gf who dictates the budgeting lol. If you're not too particular about who tunes, I know of a shop down in Texas called Dynotronics, they're selling an e-tune package that includes the license, tuning suite kit, and the initial calibration (tune) with unlimited revisions to keep up with Ecutek updates. $660+ tax, free shipping. That coupled with the cost of the ECM swap will more than likely even out to what the average cost of an Ecutek tune will cost you ($700-$850), probably no more than +$200 more. I'm expecting to pay around $1k for the entire thing, ECM swap, reprogramming, and tune.

Anyone else, please chime in if I'm wrong or missing anything :nutswinger:

Saying there is a 10hp increase over uprev is false..every car is different and some will see about the same gains as uprev like I did! There was a car that switched over and lost power...

don't have to. I called my local dealership, $130 flat rate at the request 9f the customer for a reprogramming.

Labor couldn't be too bad to reprogram it? 1-2 hours shop time sounds about right? ( want to be sure to call them out on overpricing, my local dealer sucks. They tried to scare me into a new transmission on my 35 when I went in for a simple transmission flush!)

I may take the lead on this, I have been checking into secondhand ecu prices and really want to get the ball rolling on my tune even though I only have a few bolt ons. FI isn't really in the cards for another year or so but I CAN'T STAND the MASSIVE throttle lag / surge I have been experiencing. Seriously sucks the fun out of this car...

make sure the donor vehicle matches your drivetrain as well. I'm used to it, but I only get the lag up till about 3.4k rpm, so I just hang out in the higher rev range till I get this tune thing sorted out.

IDK if its just me, but it seems like some days are worse than others and the lag isn't always there. I have found myself doing the same lately, MPG is quickly going down...

you tried cleaning your intake manifolds/TBs?

familyguy4756 02-05-2016 08:31 AM

Yeah i cleaned up the TB and flushed out the upper (which was nasssty dirty) and cleaned up some of the sloppy edges on the oem upper. I also did plugs at the same time ( all done last summer). The only thing I couldn't clean out was the lower.

I now have r2c, ART TP, aftermarket y , fujitsubo axle back. No tune yet which could clear up most of the issues?

Yeah. Rule of thumb I've heard is that if you have exhaust AND intake mods, a tune should be warranted to gain max power.

Csc failure as of 3 days ago...car is at Z1 getting the master slave and CSC elimination kit installed, so this part of the build is going to be indefinitely postponed for me.

:ohsnap1:
ugh! Sorry to hear! My CSC went at 85k (last summer) so I went with the heavy duty and a stage 2 Southbend clutch and quiet 1 piece flywheel.

Didn't know about the elimination kit at the time! let me know how it drives with that kit!

So firsts, I think the design alone is worth the cost. I was going to get this modification eventually, but...well, ish happens. The fact that they repositioned the hydraulic actuation to OUTSIDE the bell housing will save much heartache and smouldering pockets for not having to drop the transmission.

Clutch pedal pressure is amazing, as is the grip of the clutch now. I used to experience a spongy feel and a lag when I would initially shift I to a gear. This completely eliminated that, there's a clear cut point at which I feel the clutch engage, not to mention the smoothness of it is second to sex. It's like a switch now, either I'm in gear or 8m not. No more shuddering because of revs not matching exactly. What little power there was left finally could make contact with the ground, and the feel of the throttle became snappier too. Still have the oem clutch and flywheel, around 60k miles on it. Zach and Rob at Z1 said that it looked pretty good still...this was an unexpected expense, so I left it in. I'll eventually get the Z1 clutch and light flywheel when this one goes in another 2 years or so.

However, it's pretty damn expensive if you don't do the work yourself...I paid over $1300 to have it done properly at Z1. Pretty much what I was going to use for the ecu and tune...:crying:

Yes, 2008 can tune with Ecutek. :) :) :)

No can do, anything post 2009 is 7AT.

Sry mayne.

Kojack 04-20-2016 05:27 PM

Since no one have tried it beside it's all hear say then I may be the first to try it. :stirthepot:

You physically cant. There isn't enough memory to house the full RaceROM, so you'd just be getting a basic tune, nothing more.

Unless you have some rareason jdm-as-fuq ECM that is compatible with a 2008 5 speed and has more RAM.

And no, you're not the first to try it. Autosport engineering (if you've even read this thread) has been doing it for a few years now. @tommyboykim on IG has an 08 with a 2010 IPL ECM already running his setup.

I'm just looking to have basic tune along with ignition timing (this is what I really need). Yes I read that Tommyboykim has swapped over but his is MT. I have not came across someone with AT yet. That's why I was asking.

In case anyone is still interested, I have an 09 ECU working on my 08 5AT G37 and flashed with EcuTek and Racerom - it can be done !

Reach out for details if you're interested - just need to find a close match (feature for feature) donor ECU.

If anyone needs an ecu that will allow them to run FULL ecutek WITH RACEROM on their 08, PM me, i have them in stock.
