370Z Victory at 2014 SCCA Runoffs

Congratulations to Dave Daughtery and his Zorro Racing 370Z on winning the Touring 3 Runoffs title today at Laguna Seca. Daughtery put the Z34 on the pole with an all-out run in the third and final qualifying session on Thursday. He avoided a first lap melee that eliminated two top contenders from Ford and BMW, before another Mustang came up to challenge for the lead.

This was door-to-door racing at its best and Daughtery managed to fight back after losing the lead. He outbraked the Mustang entering T6 and broke out into a lead he held to the checkered flag. It was his eighth SCCA National Championship and the first for the 370Z! You can read the results and more here:

We had the pleasure of dyno tuning this car in preparation for this race, and glad to see the power put to good use when they were battling it out. It was an awesome race to watch, we were really excited to see him come back around the Mustang for the win. Congratulations David, Toni, Richard and the rest of the team.

Yes, especially when you consider he has to run restrictor plates.

Hal- considering this particular VQ37VHR had been tuned previously, can you comment on how much Dynosty changed the base tune? What type of tuning software was used and how many pulls did it take to extract the maximum from this particular package?

Great job! I want to know his suspension setup, spring rates, etc..

Found the video to the race here. The T3 race is the last one in the video.

What are some things they changed to this 370z to prevent fuel starvation, controlling high oil temps?

Elmo370z 04-12-2015 11:23 AM

Another question did they convert to hr heads or stock vvel heads?

dkmura 04-12-2015 07:44 PM

SCCA T3 rules don't allow for many changes. For fuel starvation, we usually run a full tank of unleaded race fuel. The Zs have to weight 3400# at the finish (with driver), so carrying extra weight isn't much of a problem. To solve engine overheating, an ancillary oil cooler is allowed. This particular 370Z had a VQ37VGR that was torn down after the Runoffs victory and it had the same VVEL heads it was built with from the factory.

You might be thinking of another race series- SCCA T3 is very limited in powertrain mods.

Wow. So the factory heads held up to the beating. There just isn't much information about the longevity of the vvel heads. If you don't mind what type of oil are you using for the car? Something similar to motul 300v? Congrats on the win by the way.

I'm just another Nissan Z racer who wanted to offer my own congratulations on the Z34's victory- I'm not the driver. As for the oil, I have no idea what Dave was using last season.
