helmets for autocross/track?

I am considering doing some autocross events this year, what are some good brands of helmets? and is it wise to get a used one?

takjak2 09-06-2013 02:39 PM

Don't buy a used helmet. Get an SA2010 full face helmet.

I am very happy with the Pyrotect SA2010 Pro Airflow Full Face Helmet I bought from Kamispeed a couple years ago and they gave a good deal coming from these forums.

Not bad thanks :)

I have this one I wear without the shield since not needed inside a car w/ windshield and is easier to breathe without. I did buy about a size larger than is recommended for serious racing just for comfort. For autocross this is all you need & is about $170.00 for a name brand racing product. Used is stinky head sweat nasty so don't go there. A Simpson will last you a long time and is well worth the relatively low price.

When buying a helmet. Remember this. Motorcycle and car helmets are built to different standards. And when you are trying helmets on. Make sure that it's not loose, or too tight. ;)

I made the mistake of ordering my first one with out trying any on. Started with a g force that works, but not very comfortable for me. Had to hunt around but found a local shop that had helmets and now I am using a Bell Sport. It's a full fave SA 2010 and very comfortable.

But they do loosen up as you wear them.

SA2010 full face for sure.

I'm still running a Bell SA2005, but I got it brand new for $70 since I have a abnormally small head and the store was going out of business :)

Helmets do break in. You want a helmet that fits snug without having any pressure points on your skull. Or too loose, that you can lift the helmet off your head without pulling the straps apart. Everybodys head is a different shape. Round, round oval, oval, long oval. It's best to try the helmet on before you buy. If you get a helmet over the web. Make sure that you can return it after you have tried it on.

Each helmet maker has their own sizing methods too.

the built in comm is really useful.

If you are only doing AX you may want to consider open face helmet by bell, Simpson or others .

Open face for ax allows for better vision, cooler, easier to talk with instructors.

If you have any thought of track driving get full face

I have the X-Eleven, RF1100, RF1000, and a ZII. The new X-Twelve is $$. Shoei is up there with Arai helmets in price on some models. ;)

HJC CL-16 Solid Helmet - Street Motorcycle - Motorcycle Superstore

See my signature below...hubby thought I needed the pink mohawk. Lol
It is Snell m2010/DOT rated.

Verda7junior 09-22-2013 11:21 AM

[QUOTE=It is Snell m2010/DOT rated.[/QUOTE]

M2010 is only rated for motorcycles, many tracks require an SA2010 which is rated for cars.

Rusty 09-22-2013 11:30 AM

Motorcycle helmets and car helmets are deisgned for different types of impact.

SE5spd 09-22-2013 01:26 PM

If you're tracking buy a car helmet, not a moto helmet.

Leuz 09-23-2013 07:09 PM

I am facing the same problem, which helmet to buy that is not super-expensive as I am not a regular track user. Thanks for the advices guys.

dP3NGU1N 09-23-2013 07:25 PM

The CL-16 is the cheapest Snell rated helmet out there that I've been able to find.

jooonnn 09-23-2013 08:25 PM

I autocrossed in a Wayloo Snell 2005 and it was pretty uncomfortable.

after trying my buddies arai i picked up a new arai rx-q for $320 and i absolutely love it. helps that i got such a good deal too!

figured there are a lot more expensive track necessary mods that i'd need to do before i worry about buying a SA2010 helmet. I also refuse to buy an expensive helmet before trying one too!

dP3NGU1N 09-23-2013 09:15 PM

Any number of online retailers have them for about $110+$20 shippping. I picked mine up locally for $130 at bert's mega mall.

Bell Sport full face in black. The fit is great, not too heavy, and the price is affordable for the driver who only does a few track events. Good first helmet.
