Crossbar behind seats........

Do y'all think it is safe to mount shoulder straps of a race harness to the factory crossbar? It appears plenty strong.

Absolutely not. Don't even if you have a harness brace. Roll cage only please.

Someone died here...

DO NOT USE THE FACTORY BAR FOR HARNESSES. The factory bar is only mounted to the chassis with some flimsy brackets. If you remove the interior panels you'd see this.

One option is the Robispec harness bar a few of us have. It eliminates the flimsy brackets and mounts firmly to the chassis. Here's the thread: Robispec Chassis/Harness Bar

Wonka2581 08-24-2013 10:38 PM

Dude if you mount it to the factory bar, Put me on your will first....:ugh2:

SteveBad 08-25-2013 11:20 AM

Thanks! Advice taken.

clintfocus 08-25-2013 12:32 PM

When i took mine out for my roll bar, and saw the construction and mounting, id recommend against any harness mounted to it

gomer_110 08-25-2013 04:32 PM

Here's a pic showing the flimsy stock brackets.

And a pic showing the Robispec bar mounting.

My favorite paint job since the original vfr750 it copied. I had the original back in high school and would love yours now.

I believe that shoulder harnesses must be mounted to a bar that is shoulder level. In other words, the harnesses must go straight back once they go over your shoulder. They cannot be anchored at an incline or any more than a minimal decline.

About that big, maybe a little bigger.

I'll check in the morning when I go home from work. ;)

Sh0velMan 08-29-2013 07:50 AM

Yeah don't use that brace.. but it's not the brackets that are the issue, those are plenty strong...

It's the fact that it's a 1/16th inch thick piece of extruded aluminum with styrofoam inside it.

The Robispec bar is 3" OD.

Thanks. I measured the stock bar, one way was 2.94" and the other was 2.84". Was trimming needed to get the plastic end caps to fit since 3" will be bigger?

carlitos_370z 08-29-2013 12:32 PM

It almost fits without trimming. I trim mine just alittle bit.

synolimit 08-30-2013 09:42 AM

Just a FYI, me and shovelman were talking about the robispec...because of the weight we believe its a thin wall so ill say again, even with the robispec I wouldn't use it. Use a roll cage only.

DR_ 08-30-2013 10:04 AM

This is why you keep your airbags unless you have a cage. The airbags will help a lot with the seatbelt stretch (stock or harness).

Really? Interesting.

You drive faster when you are pretty sure you won't die imo.

Vnismo370z 10-03-2013 09:44 AM

Robispec is down for maintenance, how long has this been going on for?

takjak2 10-03-2013 05:22 PM

Contact him directly. PM him here or call his cell which he posted in the past. The site has never been the primary source.

MAximum downwards incline is 15 degrees - per FIA standards for race restraints. I imagine SCCA has a similar standard

Good thread! Ty OP!!

Robispec knows what he is doing, he makes/fabricates a ton of stuff, I would definitely trust something made by Robi. Saw him yesterday at Streets of Willow!

Went on website today, says copyright 2008 and still no mention of this bar that I could find.

You need to call him. Unfortunately I don't have a phone number to give you for him but I'm sure someone on here can help you with that.
