Power steering fluid boil?

The one odd thing at the last track day was at the end of my final session when I parked, I saw steam(smoke) coming up from what I thought the passenger wheel and over the hood. after opening the hood there appeared to be some liquid splashes (a very small amount) on the passenger front left side just under the Power steering fluid reservoir, least, I think it's the power steering fluid reservoir. now that I think about it, whatever that is. The top was wet so I dried that off and am just assuming that's what it was. No codes showed on the car and I drove home from NJ (2.5 hours) no problem and no problems today.

I just don't recall anyone ever mentioning Power steering fluid boiling or overheating? wtf?

It was extremely hot and humid throughout the entire day. about 95 and humid although the my oil temps seemed to never get above 230 but even with the 34 row oil cooler just not used to seeing temps over 210 even at the last track day granted though it was 75 at my last track day.

this was at like the almost 6pm at the track so everybody was gone I was literally one of the last people to leave so fortunately my no knowledge about car self wasn't stranded.

Well at least you didnt get stranded, I know they sell an upgraded power steering cooler for the Z,

It's normal. Just swap the fluid for better ones. Also you guys need to learn to give yourself a cool down lap, you will find your brakes and everything else last a lot longer

:iagree: and the car has a PS cooler for a reason (because its prone to boiling)

alright, it's on the list. yeah I end up doing half a cool down lap rather than a full. not that difficult to make the adjustment I suppose.

I used to boil it just about every session at Mid-Ohio. Upgraded the cooler and put in redline ATF. Job done. :) Probably could have just put in better fluid.

It's cheap and it's good to get yourself collected. Sometimes people get in the zone once they get a few laps on them, that's when car starts to fail and mistakes start to happen. Slowing down and take a breather is the best way to snap yourself out of it.

Yes Sir. Purchase one of these from Z1 Motorsports.

I got the Z1 power steering cooler too.

What happens is, sometimes you fill the resevoir too high. As the fluid heats up. It expanse. With the level too high, it now starts to leak out of the cap. And becomes a mess. Seen this a number of times.

Rusty,

You have a nismo right? Can you use the Z1 34 row oil cooler and the Z1 power steering cooler and still keep that front shock/body damper thingy? In order to reuse it with the oil cooler on our last nismo, we had to flip it so the fat part of the shock was over by the power steering cooler (oem), not sure if I upgrade to the Z1 power steering cooler if I can still keep the body damper. Thanks! :tiphat:

I have both the 34 row oil cooler and the power steering cooler. I had to flip the body dampener (like you) and put a spacer behind the mounts with longer bolts for clearance on the oil cooler. If I remember right. The spacers I made are 1/4" thick alum plate. ;)

Yep. Mine is only filled a little bit over halfway when cold. When hot from a session it is almost completely full. That is with redline ATF.

I boil the power steering in autocross runs on the 350 if temps are over 75f. Install a larger cooler and go to a higher temp fluid. For an HPDE car, this will be sufficient. Autocross...not so much. We don't have enough speed to make effective use of a cooler, and we turn 25+ times a minute.

Old thread BUT

Would you recommend a power steering cooler for street use? I hit a raccoon few years back and the raccoon bent mine. Looking at a upgrade? Think itll be overkill and pointless? Im on the fence of going oem or z1
