powershifting ?

i dont own a z but im on another forum as well. i drive a 07 civic si. it has a redline of 8k. i didnt get the answers i was looking for on the other forums so im posting my ? here in hopes of getting an answer that makes sense. we all are car enthusiasts here so please dont flame me for driving a honda. i come in peace.

my ? is when i go to the track im trying to get the best time i can obviously, but i can powershift 3,4 but not 2nd. what happens is it doesnt grind, it just feels like that gear is closed off. does anyone know why that would be. at first i thought it was human error but i tried it repeatidtly and still no dice. i even let someone else try it and they couldnt do it either.

so i started to think since i have some mods that the motor is spinning too fast for the transmission to keep up. but people tell me thats not the issue. can anyone here shed some light on this for me? its really frustrating me and im going back to the track on the 30th so i want to be able to know what the problem is so i can correct it in time for the track.

im running a 15 flat where other people at the same track with the same car and same mods as me ran 14.2 and on street tires because their honda civic si let them powershift the 1-2 shift. that just kills me that im losing that much time on the 1-2 shift. when i hit 2nd my rpms drop to 6300 whereas on a powershift they would land at 7k.

please help

maybe need some motor mounts or shifter bushings or maybe its the tranny.. do you have the stock clutch in there or is it aftermarket.. either way not power shifting 1-2 wont give .8 off your time.. maybe .2 if your lucky

I drive an 06 rsx s and i have like half of the mods you have and I am gettin in mid to low 14's. how many times have you been to the track? I ask this (and I am not flaming you at all I promise) because when i first started going to the track I was in the 17's. A lot of it is experience. I still get nervouse watching those flashing lights anticipating the green light. As the above poster mentioned... motor mounts help do wonders on fwd cars.

P.S. forgot to mention that the rsx is notorious for the 2nd gear issue. I would take it to your dealer and tell them whats happening I had the same problem and it was my syncros so they changed it out... twice so far haha. No more racing for me cuz the 2nd time wasn't free :(

well the 1st time i was at teh track i had teh 18" wheels and ran a 15.4 without powershifting. ran 4 times that night. teh second time i was there i ran 15 times and put the stock 17"s on and ran 15.1 without powershifting. the 3rd time i ran 15 times also and ran 15 flat powershifting.

my average r/t is 0.01-0.02 so im not nervous at the tree.

ps. i dont think the dealer would cover it if i told them taht when i powershift into 2nd it doesnt go in. please check and fix if needed. i think theyll void my warranty due to abuse. what did you tell teh dealer to get them to fix it.

Brazilbro 07-19-2009 01:40 AM

r/t doest effect E.T. time.. what are your 60ft times? to me it does sound like syncros to me.. on stock clutch it should pw shift like butter.
to make you feel better it could also be the clutch.. but its funny that all the other gears pw shift fine

Bushguts 07-19-2009 09:49 AM

ya i know that my rt doesnt affect my et. i was just saying what my rt's were to show that its not my nervousness making me mess up because im not nervous at all. my 60' is a 2.3. i have 15k on my car and i just started powershifting so i dont think that the synchros could break that fast.

2nd gear Syncros are bad

+1^

As an old school Drag Racer from way back to the 60's, I too will lay money on the 2nd gear Syncros as being bad. Since the 1 - 2 shift is the easiest to preform, it's my opinion only bad Syncros can prevent it from happening.............
:tiphat:

I agree with the syncro theory. Your car may have low miles, but it may have been a slight defect form the factory. My tC for instance occasionally grinds when powershifting to 3rd, and it's been like that since day 1. It doesn't happen at all in normal driving so I never really cared much to fix it.

Tough part is though, how could you ever explain something like that to the dealer (I guess you really can't)???

Crash 07-19-2009 02:31 PM

Another possible reason is that there is a 'no-lift-shift' lock out solenoid on second gear gate for 1st to 2nd shifts. This could be to protect the clutch. I know that on many cars, the manufacturers try to prevent people from power shifting. Some back off the throttle. I can see a gate lock out like they do with CAGS on T56 transmissions.

Only thing I can really say is this, I wanted to dump tons and tons of money into my RSX... until i went to willow springs for the first time and realized fwd cars are just not as much fun as rwd. No offense to your car but I really wouldnt put too much money into because it will always be limited by those front wheels attempting grab traction as they bounce all over heck. I would just keep practicing and if possible find a 1/8 mile track for practice. Theres one out here in san diego and its way cheap and you can do tons of runs in one night. I would just enjoy it for what it is because even you boost it or put even more money into to make it faster, theres always gonna be that EVO with $3k invested in it runnin 11's :p

There's a few capitol letters. Feel free to sprinkle them around your post, peferrably at the begenning of sentences. At least you used punctuation...

I thought the Civic Si had some issues with the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros? I also have a 07 Civic and I thought I read on the forums that the Si's had some issues.

On SRT4s (my previous car) the trans would only take so much abuse from WOT shifting before the synchros gave up and died. At worst the synchro gear would break up and bounce around the trans, wreaking just about everything. In my case I ended up buying an upgraded transmission once I was locked out of 2nd.

I drive DC2R I couldn't do it before as well until I got my ATS X-Gears :P
and then it was easier to play around with. you could consider this altho it can get pricey
