FML, Broken again :(

Last session of the day and my rear end started making a high pitch whine under load. Took the car home and checked underneath, all looks normal. Decided to just give up and bring it to Z1 on tuesday, when I reversed for the first time all day and there is a bad knocking noise when starting in reverse, coming from the left axle.

However, taped up the wife's Z4 and will give that a shot tomorrow. Just got new tires for it friday too!

Was going to take the new Stang, but the 235 tires on it are just too skinny! breakin isn't an issue cause its a 2 year lease.

Sounds like the rear end to me.

You may have to drop it and see whats broke or the reverse in the trans? Either way it doesn't sound good :(

shadoquad 06-03-2012 12:32 PM

:(

Mike 06-03-2012 12:32 PM

yeah, its not the trans. its definitely in the left rear half shaft, I just can't pinpoint which end.

The Z4 was fun today, while the factory brake fluid held out. Pedal started getting soft so I just did one session, but it was good.

jetguy 06-03-2012 12:38 PM

Hope its not too bad!

Bummer! :(

Kind of on-topic, what kind of tape are you using on the Z4 to protect from chips?

that is masking tape used for powdercoating. It is awesome for the track though, leaves zero residue but is thick enough to stop any thing that could get thrown at you.

I buy it in bulk from the manufacturer, because I use a lot, but you can get it here:

Green High Temp Tape

Thanks for the link! I guess you prefer this over traditional painter's tape? How does it hold up on waxed/sealed surfaces? I couldn't get painter's tape to stick to my car this year... way too much Zaino on the car. Guess that's not a bad thing

This might be an option for the trip down to FVR next year!

it goes over a waxed surface fine and sticks real well. Its much better than painters tape.
