Driving schools
 

After doing several HPDEs I've found myself, like a lot of you, hopelessly addicted to driving on a track. I think that eventually I want to do time attacks and wheel to wheel racing.

I've been considering going to the 3 day Mid-Ohio school next month since it's close, relatively inexpensive, and with only one more day/class you can get your NASA competition license. I think it would be a blast but I haven't been able to track down anyone locally who can tell me more about it.

Have any of you guys done a professional driving school like Bondurant, Skip Barber, or the Mid-Ohio school? At what point in your 'driving career' did you attend the school? Do you wish you had more or less driving experience when you attended? Post your experiences!

I did Skip Barber mainly as a way to get my competition license. I guess it all depends on what skill level you are at currently to see how much you will gain from it.

Many years ago I did the Skip Barber open wheel driving school. It was fun but I don't think that I really learn't much from it that could be applied to a road car. I know other track rookies that did the 3-day Skip Barber where they use pretty much all the different cars and they found it helpful.

Like pretty much anything you get out of it what you put into it. If you focus on listening to your instructor and perfecting everything they have you doing you will come out a better driver. I think it is important to go in there with some driving ability so that you are more focused on technique rather than driving so as to not be overwhelmed. Sure you could probably get the same results with HPDE instructors but it takes longer, quality of instruction varies and you have to adapt to different people.

How much do lessons at these schools typically cost?

The ones where they provide the vehicles are very expensive, a little over $1000 a day. Schools were you provide your own vehicle are cheaper.
