Low end torque on 350 vs the 370?

Question for those who had a 350. Is it me or does it seem like the 370 either has less low end torque or the drive by wire is slowly down the way the throttle plate opens up? I had an 04, that car felt a little bit stronger down low. A few other drivers noticed the same exact thing, just want to see what everyone's take it on it

The first thing that came to my mind on my first drive was the 370z seems slower than my 350z that has about 50 less hp. I drove my dads highlander and that seems faster. However the 370z is faster than both.

I had a 2005 350Z (non-revup 6MT) for a few years before I got the 370Z. The 350Z was definitely more torquey at lower rpm's but topend wasn't so great. It might just be me but the VQ37VHR seems a bit lazy below 4000 rpm; after that it more than makes up for it. The biggest difference I noticed is that in 3rd & 4th gear the car seems to accelerate a lot smoother.

I wasn't referring to the overall speed, just simply the 2000-4000RPM. I am not sure if it truly has less torque or if it is the drive by wire system being an a$$

I believe it is both. The peak torque on the VQ was at 3800 rpms so the power came on pretty early and flattened out up top. The 370's peak torque is at 5200 rpms. But it also feels like the drive by wire setting on the 3.7 is set to be less responsive, which equals smoother day to day driving. The 350 was very responsive and jerky (which I liked though). I think this was the first thing most former 350 drivers noticed.

its that V-Tech kicking in at 4k on the 370!!!!!!! haha jk

I dont think the VQ felt torquier overall, it came on early and took a shyt by 5k, the VHR comes on and stays linnear all through the powerband, the hp/tq on the VHR work hand and hand quite well together, which is why its faster in the straights.

I agree with you. Especially when starting out in first gear my 2003 350Z feels way more torquey. But I have to keep reminding myself that my 350Z has about every bolt on you can put on it plus 3.92 gears. Still the DE 350Zs have loads of torque from the get go.

To me the 370Z is deceptively quick. I think some of that is due to the higher rev motor, but also to the overall refinement of the car compared to the 350Z.

It's just an observation I got after the first two autox, will know more about top end after track days

DIGItonium 05-04-2010 07:58 AM

What I miss about the 350Z DE is the necksnapping whiplash inducing throttle response down low. In the 370Z, it's like traction control is still active.

2007 350Z
Torque 268 @ 5200 RPM

2009 370Z
Torque 270 @ 5200 RPM

Tell us again how much more torque the older engine has. Funny stuff. :icon17:

(captain obvious to the rescue)

The OP mentioned that he had an '04 350Z, different motor than the 2007 model.

I believe the DE had more TQ, but a very weak top end.

DE had strong top end for what it was. It made its peak power at 6200 rpm and stayed almost flat till 6600. 6MTs that were close in a race at lower speeds against cars that compared to them usually had the advantage in higher speeds. 5ATs on the other hand were crap when it came to high speeds. 3rd gear was just too tall for the power band that the car had.
