Track wheel/Tires

I am seriously thinking about buying a 370Z again. Like teh Corvette I owned, tires/rims are going to become a serious problem for the car due to the size and cost. I am curious to see what others are using to avoid the problem?

Thanks

What sort of track stuff you looking to do? A second set of stockers with some decent tires will probably do the trick.

If I owned a 370Z, I'd be autoxing. I'd buy a second set of stock wheels and run 295/30 Hoosier A6's...

cossie1600 03-09-2010 08:53 PM

19s are not exactly great for racing or for the wallet. The stock 18" are narrower than the 19", hard to fit 265/295 on there

you can run with 245 fronts and 275/285 on the rear on the stock 18's, Nitto555's are what most car mags are using on their track cars, give em a shot. The NT01's were a hit with alot of mags and shops when they came out as well, they're worth a look.

I went with Toyo R888s

Front: 265/30ZR19
Rear: 295/30ZR19

cossie1600 03-09-2010 11:43 PM

NT555 are garbage, no real trackie will use them.

I really don't want to use 19s, they get very expensive, especially with the lack of camber adjustment on the Z.

R888 are garbage also, used them on 3 cars and hated it on every single one.

Sharif@Forged 03-10-2010 08:51 AM

What's your budget? Best of the best is Volk/Rays wheels but they can be expensive as dedicated track wheels. How about a dual purpose wheel that can be used for both? How serious are you going to get with track days?

I guess you know tires/wheels then?

I am good with the tire choice and type, I am just curious to see what wheels I could use to clear the sport brakes. I got rid of the Corvette because of the $400 rear tires, I really don't want to pay that much for tires again.

I am using a set of 4 rear 18x8.5" 350Z Rays track wheels that I had widened to 9.5" by weldcraft. 19.8 lbs each, and I use a 25mm spacer in the rear, but the wheel will clear everything without the spacer. Paid 500 for the wheels and 900 to widen them.

I use BF Goodrich R1s, 275/35-18 all around. Almost a hoosier, but cheaper.

That's odd, cuz I fit 295 Hoosiers with no problem on an 8" wheel. Maybe people should just listen to people with actual experience and in the know.

What about the enkei rp's?
I'm thinking of getting the 18's as dedicated track rims

Autox is not the same as track days, perhaps you should try getting out of 3rd gear. Getting the tires to fit doesn't mean it will work right, I have enough data from my datalogger to prove that.

I just want to buy a set of cheap wheels, they will get destroyed and pitted by the brake dust and tire installer anyway. I did some quick search, it looks like the cheap options would be to get the narrower size rims or just pay a boatload of money for the big bad boys. They get quite pricey when you start rolling 9 or 10" rims.

Wow, way to be a want-to-be elitist a-hole with zero knowledge about me. Who's to say I haven't done any on the track activities? I'm more into competitive motorsports, while I currently lack the funds to turn a 370z into a dedicated race car (and I know you do to by your directly quoted question), who's to say I haven't done other forms of racing besides autoxing?

To answer your original question, buy a cheapy set of 17's or 18's ( I see plenty in the 20 lb range at a decent price at an ample width to properly fit a wide tire on tirerack) and enjoy your track days.

Ruff 03-15-2010 01:29 AM

Sorry, I don't mean to be a ****. I just wanted to see what people are using for rims at the track. I should have been more clear. My goal is to find rims that I don't care about so I can trash it at the track without crying about it later.

It's all good, my apologies for the respone. What's your budget? I think that link I gave you is a viable option, if $300 a wheel is do-able. As you said, it does get expensive to get wide wheels in a diameter large enough to fit over stock or larger brakes. Goodluck on the search, I'll keep an eye out. A set of 350Z 2006-07 Track, 350z Nismo, or 370z Sport wheels might as be an option. Prices on those are all dropping.

cossie1600 03-16-2010 09:34 PM

I was hoping for $1K shipped to me for everything, new or used. I really don't give a crap about how they look. It just has to be the right size, price right and weight less or equal to stock. I have used stockers to race for the longest time (reason why i said they will get damage from tire installers and race pads).

Mike 03-16-2010 09:43 PM

how big of tires are you wanting to run? In that price range I don't think you will find anything wider than 8". If you keep 275s all around like I do, you could go with a 9, or possibly and 8.5, but I don't think there is anything light and cheap. Thats why I widened the stock 350Z rays. They only weigh 19.8 lbs and are now 9.5" wide, and were 1100 total for me.

cossie1600 03-16-2010 10:02 PM

Without driving the car, I would say 275 all around sounds like a plan. I used my 350 for the longest time with 235 or 245, I assume the 370 probably could use 265/275. I am doing searches right now to see what my best options are. I can't even find a set of Dunlop Z1 or Kuhmo XS in the size I want to run!

How does 18x9 45mm sound?

Thanks

mine are now 9.5 +46, so those will fit with no issues, as they give 7mm more inner clearance and 5mm more outer clearance. however, you will probably want to do like me, and use a 25mm spacer on the rears. 30 would even work better with that size, but having them slightly tucked will help with rock chips, both front and rear. (I use no spacers in front and they sit about perfect)

A lot of guys like to stay staggered with bigger rears, but i find the square setup neutralizes the handling very nicely, and I can rotate tires.

Mike 03-16-2010 10:21 PM

compared to stock and without using spacers, the 9 +45s would be like this:
stock fronts are 9+47, so you would be tucked 2mm in front
stock rears are 10+30, so you would be tucked in 28mm, but with only 2mm less inner wheelwell clearance. 25mm spacers would definitely solve that though, and still allow you to rotate.

Yeah, I have a set for my practice set of 275 Hoosier A6s. We rock the same designed SSR's (the SSR's are lighter) for our 295 Hoosier A6s.

cossie1600 03-18-2010 08:16 AM

It sucks how they are $299 in the 370z are $199 in most other sizes! ARGGGG I feel like it is the Corvette all over again
