BlackArmor Helmets

Wondering if anyone has bought or tried there Helmet.
Looking at doing a pre-order of the 2020 helmet.
probably will be my last helmet, since I am 67 and still going strong, not sure of what happens at 77 :driving:

Never heard of them, if they have SA2015 or FIA approval, it should be okay.

Rusty 05-17-2020 07:48 PM

Never heard of them.

The new Snell 2020 Standard helmets will be out around Oct. All of the older Snell 2015 Standard helmets are going on sale now. If getting a new helmet. I would wait until Oct to pick up the new Snell 2020 helmets. If you find a Snell 2020 now. It's a counterfeit. Snell is not releasing the Decals until Oct.

I've been using a black armor helmet since ~2016. There not a super high end helmet but definitely high quality imho. Great way to get into a SA rated carbon helmet without the hefty price tag you might normally see.

I don't know how much they get used in road racing but they've been relatively popular in the SCCA autox world.

Never seen one before let alone used them. If they have a snell rating then they have been tested so they should be ok. That said, RaceEquip helmets are similarly priced and those I have seen all over.

The most important thing with helmets, besides the correct rating, is the fit. You will be wearing this for at least 30min at a time. It's important to try different ones out, when I went to try out helmets I found that all the Bell ones felt uncomfortable, like something was pressing on my forehead. The HJC ones felt fine, if I had not tried first I would have been stuck with a restocking fee or an uncomfortable helmet for 7 years. Unfortunately there only seems to be online sales for these guys based on their dealers&distributors section.

Finally, seriously consider the weight of the helmet and getting a HANS they have ones that work even without a harness. A heavier helmet will fatigue your neck doing 1+g corners and braking again and again. Also in an accident a 1lb difference could turn into a 50lb difference on your neck, dropping a 50lb weight and catching it with your neck. A Hans would catch that weight first.

Arai Helmets makes helmets to fit different shaped heads. From Round, to Long Oval.

My friend uses them for SCCA and the 25hr of Thunderhill. I think his is an SA2015? Like said above, it's a great entry level carbon helmet, and was something I was looking at for my next helmet when my 2015 expires. Just make sure it fits your head.

Thanks all for your comments, really over the course of my career, helmets were almost bought without trying them on... Black Armor, partly because the price pre-order is 599.00 for a 2020, partly I like carbon fiber look. It will only be used in AutoX and some track days, appreciate everyones advice

This is what I use, Arai open face, you can change the interior to change the fitment, and they are pretty nice.

I would recommend an open face helmet for car use (unless you have an open top).

I have helmets from Arai, Shoei, and Bell.

My track day buddy has one and loves it. I see quite a few of them at the track hear in AZ and Cali. As stated you want try on helmets even if you know your head size as they not measured or shape the same.

LMAO, my head is round like a cue ball and small in size. I wear a small in a Bell helmet and couldn't even get an Aria of the "same size" over my head. I was like Asian sizing!!!

Can't speak to the head shape aspect but I do know the sizing info blackarmor has/had on their website is spot on. That was how I determined the size I needed and it worked out in my case.

Rusty 05-19-2020 05:50 PM

I have a long oval head shape. If I go by most sizing charts. The helmet is too tight in the front and the rear of the helmet.
