Track Data Loggers
I've been using Harry's Lap Timer on Android tablet along with Dual XGPS160, OBDLink MX, and GoPro Hero 3+ but having to spend way too much time between sessions on connectivity issues to do much data analysis and review. I'm thinking about stepping up to the AIM Solo2-DL data logger or the APEX Pro Digital Driving Coach.
I'm seeking feedback from others you are using these or other data loggers - particularly if and how it helped you most both while driving and also in post race analysis? Also, I know these are typically accessing the CAN bus through OBD port, but are there other points where the CAN bus can easily be tapped so that I can still use my ODB for another device? |
I have the Aim Solo-DL and Smartycam 2.1. I used to do what you did, with Torque app, Dual XGPS160, and a go pro and it was just way too time consuming to startup before I headed on track and after to shutdown and then sync and view.
With the APEX it doesn't connect to your ODBII from the info in their website so you won't have any RPM data, engine temps, throttle position, etc. Not too big of a deal but it's nice. The soloDL is so easy to read and with the predictive lap times I can see when I change something (like turn in point) if that helped my time or hurt it in seconds while driving. It also has some pretty advanced software for analysis. It also has a lot of expand ability potential but it's pricey. It's also much better to view on a big screen like a laptop or tablet then a phone. One thing to note I did have one experience where the HPDE organizer did not allow dedicated lap timers but was ok with phones with video (and lap timer) apps. Some sort of nonsense about only racers use dedicated lap timers and there is no racing in HPDE. So don't ditch your phone/app/mount. Audi Club NA - NJ Chapter |
I purchased the new Aim Solo 2dl but have yet to use it. My running partner got one at the same time along with the camera. It pretty awesome. I don't know of HPDE organization out west here that does not allow them.

Just got the Aim Solo 2 DL through Corner3 Motorsports. Love it and i havent even scratched the surface of all its capabilities yet.
Its OBDII compatible which will provide you RPM, speed, brake input, throttle position, coolant temp and some other data that you will be able to analyze using their race studio software. The DL2 can also serve as a dash replacement, providing RPM, speed and shift light functionality. In Nissan Challenge we have been using it to pick apart our laps and find places where we can improve our driving. You can even compare your lap against another drivers simply by sharing the lap file and importing it into race studio. Highly recommend it |
