Strength of rear axles and drive shafts

What is the strength of the axels and drive shafts with drag radials ... is there a range where they become a issue or is it to random .. I can’t really find any info about it

Spooler 08-30-2018 10:57 AM

They become an issue around 600-650hp. Get above that and you will need some DSS Pro Level axles.

So it’s more axel issue than driveshaft ? I would assume TQ around 550+ at that hp range as well

Spooler 08-30-2018 07:02 PM

Yes, I am sure the driveshaft may be an issue somewhere. No sure on that one.

By design the axles should fail first. Our driveshaft is carbon fiber I believe, so I can't imagine what replacing one would cost. :eekdance:

$1,238.99. :tiphat:

FWIW, most are putting on $2000 1000hp rear axles before considering replacing the OEM driveshaft.

Just wondering what are the odds of the factory breaking ..haven’t seen much info on them breaking ...do most people not change them unless they build bottom end of the motor I mean 600-650 hp is more less the upper end without building

I’ve seen stock everything go 1.50sec.60’.
That’s hooking pretty dang good; for a 3300-3400-Z (minus driver).
Shouldn’t be an issue for you, unless you’re launching harder than that...Most of your lower 10sec & the (1) high 9sec 1320ft. Z , use full blown drag slicks.
As mentioned above: axles are weaker than driveshaft: So if you’re fortunate to have that much power to the wheels & launching hard enough to break an axle,,,I’d say congratulations. As not many people have actually done it.
0 reports that I’ve seen on CF driveshaft breaking.
You must be getting loaded up & running in Darlington soon?
Unsure when you go,,,I’d like to come out.
I’ve ran @CarolinaDragway a few times in Jackson SC.
A 10sec. Pass would be awesome

I've seen one. But it wasn't due to power. The damage was caused by an idiot who didn't reconnect the exhaust piping.

I remember that thread.

Tony has broken a couple axels in his G35 sedan HR at the drag strip. Not sure what time he was running but I’d guess 600-650whp.
