Staggered Track Width: Good or Bad?

Hi Zeeniacs,

Hoping to gain some insight if you guys have any experience to share. I'm currently scouring the370z forum and the rest of the internet for golden nuggets of info.

To the best of my measuring skills and accuracy of my home depot tape measure, I have recorded a track width of 62" up front and 61 1/4" in the rear for my 2010 base 370z.

I have a slight idea to what i might get out of this but, for you track experienced folks, what should i expect from this? IMO, I think the difference in track width is minuscule to create unbalanced handling characteristics.

side note: My Z is a base model with a square wheel and tire setup. I'm using the base enkie wheels with Pirelli Pzero. Specs as listed:
18x9 +15; 265/40/18; only alignment spec front L/R camber -1.9 and stock ride height with stock suspension system.

P.S. IN THE DISTANT FUTURE I'm going to add 20mm spacers in the rear to even out track width to get close to an actual square stance. If you are running a complete square setup like i describe, I'd like you hear from you!!

P.S.S. Will be visiting Adams Motorsports Park on 8/5/17 give me a holla if you see me. I'm the noob with grey z on base wheels and I'm wearing a black helmet.

IMO that small difference isn't something to be concerned with, especially if it's your first time on a road course. Honestly I don't hear much concern about it from people here who frequent road courses. Biggest track issues with the Z, besides the issues needed to be resolved before you can get on the track, it the lack of a stiff front anti roll bar. Best recommendation is get at least a few track days out there before you get to changing stuff. The Z is good enough as is for starters. And have fun out there!

Staggered isn't bad. That's for sure. Going to a square setup to balance there car is the wrong reason. A square setup is barely more economical and never the fastest. Some classes with max tire size overrule this discussion.

While you're a "noob" don't worry about it. Get more seat time.

and then more seat time.

Running square 18x10 +25 on 265/40 Hankook RS3's with 20mm spacers in the rear to flush them out. Car handles pretty good, don't know if the spacers made much of a difference in handling but i know I like running my square setup much more than the factory stagger for the sport and nismo wheels.

On a side note, I'll be attending Round 5 of Nissan Challenge at Fontana ACS on 8/20. Come out and run with us, we collect lap times, award plaques and tally points for the season in a friendly but competitive series.

Get some seat time on the track before making whole sell changes. Add a 34 oil cooler, bleed your brakes with a good fluid. Something like Motul 600 to start with, and some different pads. Yellowstuff will do you on both street and track until you get faster. Have fun, and don't be afraid of asking questions at the track about lines, braking points, and apexes. :driving:

All i know is that i got faster after going square, understeer sucks and i can rotate the car better with throttle input than i ever could with the stagger setup

I understand now, how badly our car needs an engine oil cooler. I thought I was giving myself a good chance using Nissan's ester oil. Spoke with Juan in Nissan fontana race shop and he recommended getting a 34 if I plan to take the car to the track more than once a year.

Oil cooler will be the next mod. I should have bought it first before getting wheels tires and UCAs.

Going to get an oil cooler now that I've seen my temps pass 260. I should have done this mod first. Anyway, I'm aming to install it by sept. I'll run with you if there are any more hpdes you plan on going to after.

Nice! You'd definitely need the oil cooler tracking with us during the summer but, the good news is we'll be hitting the track once a month till the end of the year. So we'll be at Buttonwillow in Sept, Streets of Willow in Oct and Chuckwalla in Nov. Give me a holler if you're coming out, we'd love to have you with us.
