Lap timing phone app

Trying to find good phone app that you can set to track and don't need to mess with til after session. The ones I have seen you need to indicate when a lap is complete. Want one that is smart enough to know when lap is completed. Thanks everyone!

You have 2 choices that are usable / valid.

1. Race Chrono
2. Harry's Lap Timer

Both are $20 for their paid version.
Only RaceChrono is free to try.

I went with 1.

I use Harry's Lap Timer. It automatically detects lap start and finish and supports external GPSes for more precise tracking (I use a Dual XGPS160 for 10hz updates). Here's a video captured using Lap Timer and a Hero 4 Black:

i use trackaddict on my iphone. it pairs via bluetooth to my external gps and obd2 sensors and over wifi to my gopro. i use racerender to create videos using data from trackaddict and video from the gopro. there is no interaction necessary during sessions.

What is your budget, and how detailed is your analysis of the data?

Like others have mentioned, you'll want to get an external GPS. I started using Harry's Laptimer with only the iPhone (and OBD-II), but the results were wildly different and not pinpoint accurate on GPS. You'll want a GPS with 10hz or above.

I just bought a VBOX Sport and I highly recommend it. This is top of the line equipment. It refreshes 20 times per second (20 Hz) and is very accurate. The unit will store the data on an included SD card, plus if you pair it to your iphone, you can use their laptimer app to see it live. Also included is their own desktop (windows) software for data analysis which is pretty powerful. Their files work with racerender if you want to overlay on a video too.

Lap timing phone app

This is video with data from my VBOX Sport gps only. The video and gps were recorded separately and then merged on the computer using Racerender. You can see how accurately the speed rises and falls compared with the audio. I didn't have my OBD2 connected at the time.

I wish the OBD2 on the Z would put out throttle and brake %. I guess I could overlay temps and such. But who really want to see that.

Throttle percentage is available in OBDII, but not brake pressure, at least as far as I know.

Correct, you can read: "Throttle Position D" which is gas-pedal position.

NOT Available
  • Brake pressure
  • Brake Pedal position
  • Oil Pressure
  • Oil Temperature

I know I posted this video on another thread, but for completeness I'll post here to show the datalogging.

The VBOX Sport was used to log the data, and then overlaid on the video using Racerender 3. Notice how accurate the acceleration and speed are. Throttle position was logged using Harry's Laptimer paired to the PLX Kiwi OBD-II which is not as precise as the VBOX. I recommend getting the external antenna for the 370Z.
