dealing with spam

I suggest that some number of members who lurk here during the day be deputized to delete spam posts, or that the site be set to automatically delete the post of and ban a member if enough paying members report a post as spam and the spam poster has less than so many lifetime posts. There could even be some sort of human or bot challenge to make sure the spam accusation isn't unwarranted.

Thoughts?

It's a good idea!:iagree:

I agree, I think there are plenty capable and and willing members here who could help out with doing something like that.

Make everyone become a premium member.

Most spam "users" are most likely automated and banning them doesn't really do much. Their systems will just generate new users.

Yes, but it would be nice to delete their posts, especially the pornographic ones in the sfw forums.

TreeSemdyZee 01-18-2011 11:19 PM

True.

chops 01-18-2011 11:25 PM

agreed. the norcal forum was inundated with porn today. was scrolling through a post and BAM...

suffice to say, i stayed off the forum all day at the office. did NOT want to get in trouble.

A little porn never hurt anyone.

You could always do an IP ban.

When I moderated some forums, there was a feature in vBulletin that would make you enter a Capcha or a random question in order to register. That might prevent the issue from occuring in the first place.

Norcal forum is still swamped with porn/NWS images BTW

While it would probably address the problem of spam accounts, I agree with Thor. I think it would hurt the community in general.

Yea I know. But there has to be a simple solution to this. What if it was a dollar for base members? And if it was still spam? We could close there account and the site could make money off them.

ChrisSlicks 01-19-2011 07:24 AM

I think it is time for AK to turn on email verification for new accounts. Picture verification would be a good option too. The spam that is hitting is all automated, you just need a process that will defeat the bots.

chops 01-19-2011 05:57 PM

dude this is getting rediculous. time to integrate those capatcha verifications that even my human eyes have a hard time guessing.

i cannot surf this forum at work anymore. the northern california forum is being POUNDED (no pun intended bahaha) with porn
