Search sucks

I constantly have to weed through dozens of unrelated topics to find what I'm looking for. I'm sure someone else has suggested the search get refined but I wouldn't dare search for the word "search". In all seriousness, it really needs some tweaking. I'm relying on doing google searches with site:the370z.com appended to the end of my search string.

I don't have a problem with it. It's more a matter of choosing the right keywords than the search algorithms sucking.

If you have better luck using Google to search the site, then by all means use that. But I don't think the search needs any tweaking as I haven't had any problems with it -- and I use it all the time.

^ I agree!

What exactly are you searching for?

Yeah I just feel like I get too many results that do not relate to the search string. I know how to use the correct keywords and I'm not a noob to the internets either. Google search seems to do much better and I'll continue to use that.

Let me google that for you

"Advanced" Search, search Titles only.

I just realized too when I was searching "first oil change" it actually omits first and oil so my search was only looking for "change".

Yeah, that's where Google comes in. :)

steveg78 03-23-2010 07:23 PM

Yeah I guess when you're searching short phrases like CAI, HFC, CBE etc...the forum search will ignore

AK370Z 03-23-2010 07:42 PM

When a phrase is too small, forum search will ignore it (even though I have set the lowest keyword allowable to 3 letters now). If it's used along with another word for example "CAI gain ", "HFC review" or "Oil change", the 3 letter words will no longer be omitted (like before). I just tried "oil change" and it seems to work well. Take a look:

Please note, you'll still get search result for the word "oil" and "change" as well. That's unavoidable.

Basically, if you're searching for a small word, don't forget to add another word which will reduce the chances of a broad search result. Also, ALWAYS type your keywords and then select Titles only. You can even narrow your search by clicking on the appropriate section.

I know VBulletin search isn't perfect. Hopefully the next version of VB has better search options.

Also, I will looking into the that custom google search for our forum.

Thanks

AK

Thanks for the explanation AK. I tried some other searches and it looks to be better, especially when selecting titles only. I think it's about time I make my donation to your site since I will be hanging out here for the foreseeable future.

Oh yeah and adding the google search to the site would save people from opening a new window, would be a nice-to-have feature.
